I also forgot about adding in the cost of word star or the like, computing was not cheap in the beginning. Cost of good modems were not cheap either. Cha-Ching Cha-Ching.

I spent at least $3K in 1993 dollars for my first PC. Pentium, 16MB, SCSI disks (the SCSI adapter alone was $200), 1024×768×24 graphics, 17″ monitor.

Windows NT I got for free (legitimately; I worked at DEC, which had an employee license).

When I first start my computer sales and service biz in 1990 a 386/33 including a 14″ 640×480 color VGA monitor went for around $3,500, a 286/12 about $1,300–they still had XTs but I avoided selling them. There were no color laptops, with a monochrome green character one fetching about $2,500. They were even higher in the 1980s, some upwards of $7,000 to $8,000. All of these prices are of course prices in non-inflation amount at the time dollars, in today’s dollars about 2.5 times as much.

dave Yes I bought a Packard Bell Pentium 60 in that time frame with a Epson printer, a Reveal 23-023-007 TV Card and something else and that came in at around $3300 -$3500 I think, I have the receipt somewhere and I also have the computer and TV card as well as all the books and software.

Our first family PC was a Packard Bell also. I think it was sometime in the early 1990s, and it ran Windows 3.11 for Workgroups with the Packard Bell UI on top of it. It had a CD-ROM drive and we had a number of apps on CD-ROMs for the kids to use.

I added an HP printer that had one ink cartridge slot that you could change out between a black or tri-color one. If you had the tri-color one in, black print came out as a very dark greenish color. 🙂

I remember the “New Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia” disk. I thought it was great to be able to search through the encyclopedia when looking up something. [Remember, this is before we got online with the Web with the second PC we bought.]

I had a monthly subscription to the Computer Shopper. After about six months I cancelled it and got a refund for the remainder of the original term. It was as thick as the picture shows but about a year or so later I saw one on a rack I believe at Walmart and it was about as thin as your average magazine. I also had a subscription to PC Magazine and probably had 100 issues but I eventually recycled them. I’ve also saved many newspaper headlines as far back as 1992–here are some of them. When JFK was killed my father bought home the newspaper because he’d get it every day to check on his stocks. I certainly wish my parents had had the foresight to give it to me to save. Finally, in about 1966 my little league manger took me and a few of my friends to Peekskill, NY where the NY Jets were training. I had Joe Namath’s autograph (another thing lost even though I told myself I wouldn’t lose it). This of course was before he had made a big name for himself with his 1969 Super Bowl win over the Baltimore Colts.

takeahike I think I have one that is thicker, I am sort of remembering a real thick one maybe at Christmas or Tax time? Yes I have some floppies from PC Mag like that also.
