Just Had the Scare of My Life

OK, so on my custom rig, (Win 11 Pro 24H2, AMD Ryzen 7 CPU, Asus Tuf Gaming B650-Plus Wifi motherboard) AMD Adrenaline had downloaded a new chipset driver and requested a reboot to finish installing it. Thinking nothing of it, I rebooted… and bam! No video signal, no keyboard lights, not even a beep code, just cold, black death, so to speak. I shut everything down, unplugged and just walked away for half an hour. I then reconnected, fired it up, and low and behold, it booted again.

What could’ve caused such a thing to happen after a simple update?!

Somewhat-Reticent The initial reboot after the update was applied was a normal one through the Shutdown menu. It just went dark after that and I flipped the power switch after about two minutes’ darkness.

I’ve had this happen a few times… worse comes to worse I think ASUS has a Bios flashback port you can use if you bork something.

Warm-boot doesn’t need to read firmware data into chipset.
Cold-boot ( from power-off ) does.
Or at least that’s how it worked when I was working with new hardware.
Confirm with instructions supplied ?

I wonder if this would have gotten your system up faster. I have seen some computers but this wasn’t after an update, just random computers that didn’t boot.

I would have to unplug the cord, then press the power button and then plug it back in and then it would boot up normally. I had fixed a bunch of computers this way in a few of my past jobs.

Edit: Back when I was working for a call center for Dell, I fixed a good amount of customers computers that way.

Rich221976 Unplugging while busy can corrupt filesystems,
then booting would need to include filesystem repairs (and possible losses).
Hence battery-backups and option to stay off until manually restarted.
Glad it worked for you.
Some power buttons include warm-boot option ( short press ) and
full power-off cold-boot ( long press ).

It just happened again last night. It seems like my machine can’t warm reboot. If I shut it down and turn it on, it boots though.

For a more serious answer, firmware update? Re-flash of the current? However, seems more like a driver if it is a warm boot.

Donoreo I did a BIOS update last night and will test my ability to reboot properly when an update next requires it.
