Based on average costs, the global total value of time lost is over $100 billion annually, which is more than enough to fund your entire streaming service lineup for a thousand lifetimes.

I wonder if anyone has done a similar study on how much time people lose after switching to streaming apps where you have to wait for an app to load, then load its guide or grid of choices, then scroll through those choices before even being able to start what you want compared to the previous method of punching a number on your cable remote to instantly see what you wanted. And that’s even without counting the pre-roll ads that the apps usually insert. Typical web page loads are nothing by comparison.

This really strikes me as a “first-world” problem, rather trivial in contrast to the more important problems of everyday life for people around the world.

To a big extent the entire internet is a vast wasteland (far more so than when FCC Chairman Newton Minow used that term in 1961 to describe television), so to worry about a couple of minutes a day seems like splitting hairs.

If connections are a little better, if loading is a litter quicker, the result will be even more daily time wasted on watching stupid cat tricks etc.

I used 28.8k dialup connections for years, somehow I survived.

True, we may remember old-fashioned TV as instant even if it wasn’t. Back then you had to wait for commercial breaks to end and you had to wait for a specific time for the show to start.
