HELLFIRE Usual preface : sharing strictly and solely from a security / privacy POV to the exclusion of everything else – https://www.theregister.com/2025/04/29/take_it_down_act_passes/ Federal legislation that would protect people from having explicit images of themselves posted and shared online without their consent is set to become law in the USA after passing the House on Monday. But advocacy groups warn the loosely worded fine-print will cause collateral damage to internet companies and free speech rights. The rationale for the TAKE IT DOWN Act - protecting people from the non-consensual disclosure of intimate imagery (NDII) online - has overwhelming support. egeezer HELLFIRE I foresee the Law of Unintended Consequences rearing its head. Advocates erroneously think the law can only be used by them against their opponents, failing to realize that the law can be used by their opponents against them. Nothing good comes from poorly written legislation.
urbanriot HELLFIRE I don’t agree with this bill at all and side with the advocacy groups as we already have legal mechanisms to fight this as it is. This bill puts the onus on a lot of entities to manage civil issues and potentially violate free speech laws.
Somewhat-Reticent ThirdShifter Do nothing? Au contraire, legislation like this enables the abuse legislators claim it prevents. ( Deliberate Ignorance ? )
