you can only help somebody who wants to be helped and is willing to put in the work. and I think far far far more importantly: the overwhelming majority of people with mental health issues will never harm anybody. most mental illness can be managed, and outcomes are pretty much universally better when the person is not removed from their social support network.
there’s nothing to be gained from beating your chest about mandatory sentencing. that’s blatantly unconstitutional, and Canada is still a country that respects the rule of law. this person will not walk away from this: he killed 11 people (so far), and will either go to jail for it, or will plead insanity & find himself in a hospital for the foreseeable future. so maybe take a step down from your soap box, stop with the grandstanding, and acknowledge that the focus right now should be on helping the families put their lives back together.
