Charter Communications shares climbed 8% in Friday morning trading after the cable operator saw subscriber losses in broadband and video stabilize while raking in another 514,000 mobile lines.

In broadband, which remains the cornerstone of Charter’s business, the operator shed 60,000 subscribers (55,000 residential and 5,000 business) versus a year-ago loss of 72,000. Charter ended the period with 30.02 million (27.97 million residential and 2.04 million business). Charter lost more than the 45,000 subs expected by analysts, but this quarter’s result included the loss of about 9,000 subs from the recent California wildfires. Still, Charter’s quarterly broadband loss was nowhere near the 199,000 that cable peer Comcast shed in Q1.

Mobile remained a bright spot as Charter added 514,000 Spectrum Mobile lines (495,000 residential and 19,000 business), up from a year-ago add of 486,000. Charter now has 10.39 million mobile lines, comprising 10.06 million residential and 334,000 business subs.

Pay-TV also stabilized as Charter lost 167,000 subs, much improved from a year-ago loss of 392,000. Charter ended Q1 2025 with 12.16 million video subs. …

Yeah, I think Charter’s decision to bundle in the streaming services with their video product, as well as their pricing changes under their “life unlimited” plans has helped slow their losses. Internet pricing especially benefits by the bundles now.

Charters internet pricing appears to be lacking in the retention dept from what a co-worker was telling me. They were paying about $120 for internet only- and complained Frontier was cheaper- but Charter only dropped it to $70. Frontier locally is priced at about $50 for 1 gig fiber..

AMDUSER The same Frontier looking to be bought by Verizon? The same one that has had how many bankruptcies? If that person was paying $120 for 1 Gig they were overpaying since Charter dropped it to $100 nearly 8 months ago. That’s on them for not keeping up

I have to wonder how much the tariffs are going to affect the purchase of parts for high split upgrades as most of the equipment is imported.

Also noticed how they mention 2gig is fixing to spread to more markets. I have wonder if they are going to wait for full market completion of upgrades to start the rollout in future markets. I know that Cincinnati isn’t finished with upgrades and they are rolling out 2gig in select hubs already in the legacy TWC areas.

Posted in the main high split thread, had some “official” posts on reddit saying they are waiting for DAA cert still. Until it happens, nothing else is gonna get done outside of the phase 1 markets being wrapped up.

Motorola870 I have to wonder how much the tariffs are going to affect the purchase of parts for high split upgrades as most of the equipment is imported.

Most of the (larger) operators will already have the physical equipment in warehouses/depots that will be needed for deployment for the next 6 to 9 months (for the same reason your general contractor stages supplies on site before the workers arrive). Longer term, whatever taxes are applied on any specific component will impact the operators plans, but it is still a work in progress as to the details (in some cases, they will need to spend more, and in some cases they will defer schedules to keep CAPEX in the same ballpark).
