Does anyone know what equipment is provided when using this service in Ontario? I recently switched to Koodoo and was sent an offer for 1.5gig fiber $79 for 2 years.

Curious if its anything with a SFP module or is it a separate ONT & Router? Is this service still PPPoE and what VLAN does it use if it is?

I don’t know a lot about it, however I seen a picture from DSLreports awhile back from some poster. I find that their prices outrageous in my area as I have been paying around $45 a month for 1.5 gigabit with bell for 2 years and got another 2 years at that price recently (Subject to price increase), I don’t know anyone who’s currently using it. It looks like it may be feasible, from the photo.

Yeah no chance for that price from Bell where I live. My deal is expiring soon and they haven’t been willing to renegotiate. i probably have to put in a cancellation request at the end of billing cycle.

The condo building I live in (1 block north of Dufferin+Steeles) is fibre-wired by Bell, but I’m an EBOX fibre customer. EBOX fibre customers who want to use smtp.ebox.ca for outbound email have to use port 587 and TLS v1.0 (YES!). This does not apply to users of 3rd-party services like Gmail/Yahoo/etc. You can get an “@ebox.net” email address for free but you have to ask.

EDIT: These are not “introductory 24-month rates”. These are regular rates.

What kind of device do they use for you?

Can you use pppoe passthrough with it?

It looks like they use a separate ONT no?

If you are considering using your own router, you need to ensure that you make the necessary settings for the PPPoE username and password as well as VLAN information.

Please note that not all routers allow VLAN configuration in PPPoE.

To establish the connection, make sure that the PPPoE configuration is done using the VLAN ID 40 option. Additionally, if your router requires you to configure the MTU value, it must be set to 1492.

There’s a downloadable smartphone app (Android+Iphone) that will “automagically” configure the router. I’m a luddite with a “dumbphone”. Plan B… a support tech called me and walked me through the menus for a manual setup of the router.

On Ebox, do you routinely get sites that default in French? I remember that used to be a complaint back in the day, since their IP’s are registered in Quebec.

That would drive me up the wall.

Sites… No. But I do watch a lot of Youtube, and occasional commercials are in French (approx 5%); good for a giggle. Weird part is that when I open Google search (Youtube’s parent) the bottom of the page consistently reports my IP address as being in Toronto.

The main problem I’ve seen is reports of people being falsely located in Quebec, and “Youtube Kids” blocks Quebec because it isn’t compliant with Quebec legislation about sites aimed at children. I’ve seen this complaint from customers of Bell and various other ISPs.

If he’s in a building wired with Bell fibre, EBOX fibre should be available (Bell owns EBOX). Go to https://www.ebox.ca/en/ontario/residential/internet-packages/ and enter his address, to see if EBOX serves it.

I’m with Bell and once in a blue moon get French ads on YouTube as well.
