While I haven’t finished it (shocking) I have played a pretty decent chunk of Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles. I had bought the physical Switch version at launch, though I was playing on the Switch 2 with the free Switch 2 upgrade for the title, so while I haven’t run into any issues with performance, for example, that may not necessarily be completely accurate for the regular version running on an OG Switch. That said I find it hard to believe that the system would really struggle with it, while the updated visuals for example are a treat, it shouldn’t be particularly hardware taxing.
Anyway, all that aside, it is a good time but kind of an odd entry. Despite being framed as an HD Remaster and Definitive Edition they actually made this weird amalgam that blends elements of the War of the Lions edition (primarily the script/translation changes) from the PSP with the original PSX version. So you end up with this weird middle ground where you do get to enjoy some of the best elements of the WotL version but…not all of them. Notable omissions are the WotL unique characters and jobs. Why they elected to do this is beyond me, but all the other new features (the improved UI, the rebalancing, the voice acting) arguably more than make up for it.
I initially was indifferent about VA being added but the more I played the more I appreciated it. Well, assuming you don’t mind the long running fascination CBU3 has with using British voice actors just like they’ve done in Final Fantasy XIV and all the subsequent expansions and Final Fantasy XVI. That said, if you enjoyed Final Fantasy Tactics, be it the PSX original or the WotL PSP version, you’ll be right at home with the Ivalice Chronicles.
