Thinking of ditching my Galaxy S24U

I have been using Samsung phones since the S3 days, and I am really beginning to dislike them. The S24U (I bought upon release) is driving me crazy by sticking me in the hip when in my front pocket when sitting, I do have the OneUI 7 stable update and, for me, it’s just meh… I was in Best Buy and looked at the Pixel 9 Pro, and it just felt great in my hand. I am going to wait for the Pro 10 later this year before I make a move. What are your feelings on Pixel’s?

There are a lot of posts (eg on Reddit) that the S24-Ultra is just too big and uncomfortable, so you are not alone…

I have a Pixel 6 Pro, and I have had Pixel phones for years, I even had them before they were Pixel devices and were actually called Nexus phones before they rebranded them to Pixel, and love them. I love the sleek Vanilla Android interface without all the overly bubbly and overly color-saturated overlays. I love how fast and responsive they are, and how I get all the updates first because I don’t have to wait for months for the updates to be customized for the custom UI. They are sleeker and more minimal with the UI, but that also makes it feel more mature to me. I am actually holding out and hoping to get the Pixel 10 Pro Fold later this year (if they release one). I think you’ll love a Pixel also. Let me know what you think if you do get one.

I’m on my 4th pixel phone and 7th overall Google phone in the last 15 years - I would never buy anything else given the choice. I had a Nexus 4 and a Nexus 6, then a Pixel 1, 3, 5, and now 8 Pro. Things I like : first to receive Android updates and latest android features. Excellent camera (I would say since the pixel 3, the google phones have had some of the best phone cameras of their respective generation). Good battery life (I can use my phone 10-12 hours non-stop before getting down to 10%). A “normal” day of only using it here and there and I still have 70% battery life left by bed time. Good reception - I get signal where my wife’s S23 doesn’t and I never drop calls. Feels good in my hand and fits fine in my pocket (my pixel 5 fit even better as it was a non-pro, but as I get older I appreciate a bigger screen). Thins I don’t like: Small list - but: Hard to find a variety of accessories like cases and screen protectors, I wish the speakers were a little louder for listening to music when I’m not connected to bluetooth. The wireless charging doesn’t work great on the charging pad in my car - I think the camera bump holds it off the pad a little too much and it charges very slow (it charges nice and fast on my normal wireless charging pad at home).

Thats basically my thoughts on it - I also prefer the pixel’s version of Android as its relatively close to vanilla android as compared to samsung’s.

I was mostly using Nexus (LG Nexus 5, LG Nexus 5X, Huawei Nexus 6P) and Pixel (3a, 4a, 4a 5G, 6 and 7) phones until “Pixel 7”.

I had good experience until “Pixel 4a 5G” but started facing issues (overheating, poor cellular reception, fingerprint sensor not working properly etc.) with “Pixel 6” and “Pixel 7”, possibly due to the early generations of Google Tensor with Samsung Exynos modems on Pixel 6 and 7.

From “Pixel 7”, I switched to Samsung Galaxy S23 and later recently switched to Samsung Galaxy S25, primary for the Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC. I did not face any issues with the S23 but I wanted the dual eSIM option in S25.

All Nexus, Pixel and Samsung phones (expect Pixel 4a) mentioned above are/were USA Factory Unlocked models. Pixel 4a alone is non-USA model, though still factory unlocked.

I have been debating buying either Pixel 8a or 9a (not USA, same country as the Pixel 4a) to replace the Pixel 4a (that is still in use) for my parents. While I like the Vanilla Android experience on Pixels, I am hesitant to buy the Pixel 8a / 9a because of the Samsung Exynos modem.

@twodogs I suggest getting the S25 Base Model over Pixel 9. IMHO Snapdragon SoC / Modem is much better than Tensor SoC / Exynos Modem.

In the Android world I have had a Sony Xperia (was great) 2 non-rememberable Samsungs, and then Pixels. It is nice to have the pure Android without the duplication of apps.

I have an S25 Ultra and I’ve never had that issue as I always take my phone out of my pocket when I sit, just naturally. In fact I’ve never had my phone in my front pocket, it’s either on the inside chest pocket of my jacket or suit or my not-wallet back pocket when I’m walking without a jacket.

Out of curiosity why do you leave your phone in your pocket when you sit? Maybe a change in habits might be an easier solution? I couldn’t imagine giving up my S25, I love it.

Some of the new Samsung apps are pretty good, like Modes and Routines (i believe previously known as Bixby). I’ve started using it to automate my life, automatically adjusting screen brightness, bluetooth, wireless, phone ringer, living room lights, etc., as I sleep and wake. I put a shortcut on my mainscreen if I go to bed early. I used to use a third party app with my last Android phone but that would randomly stop working from time to time but this Samsung software is flawless.

I’m the same as you. I never keep my phone in my back pocket when I sit. That’s just asking to break it.

I currently have a Pixel 8. No real complaints. I also keep it in my front pocket, but I also have a full flip-cover case, as I have had on all my smartphones. Moto G Gen 2, Moto G5 Plus, Pixel 4a, and now Pixel 8. The Moto G Gen 2 had the best cover, as you removed the normal back cover, and put this on. It also had a magnet in it that the phone recognized and would shut the screen off when you closed the cover. I still have the 4a and keep it as a backup (it recently got a free new battery from Google.)

I for one would never trust a Samsung phone, after the Note 7. But also, I strongly dislike them because of how they built their reputation at the start by being extremely friendly to rooting and custom ROMs. But somewhere around the S6 and N7, they’ve gone out of their way to scare off or block the crowd from doing eff all with the phones. So the exploding battery situation felt like karma for scaring away the group that most recommended them.

Moving on…

Pixel phones inherit the strength of the old Nexus by being the first to get the newest stock android out of anyone. But i never cared for how poor the hardware was, especially for the asking price.

Still, if you can get by with a Pixel’s limitations, it’s ultimately on you.
