I saw on the news that Pierre Pollievre will cancel the ban on plastic straws.
I went to Dairy Queen for lunch and they have always had plastic straws.

bjlockie the ban is so minimal that really the only companies following it are those that fell like it. You can go buy them in stores they just have to sell them in quantities over 200 and you can buy them online from Amazon in any color or quantity you want. They couldn’t actually outlaw them because they have to be available for “institutional use” and for accessibility reasons. Most local (non chain) restaurants all still offer them when dining in.

Great, so annoying, I keep plastic straws in the car which I can order from amazon to counteract this ridiculous ban.

I went to Dairy Queen for lunch and they have always had plastic straws.

Not only that but Starbucks, Wendys, and a lot of other restaurants have plastic lids. The plastic ban was stupid and should never have occurred in the first place. One of those knee-jerk actions to placate an extremely small minority of our country.

I keep a few glass straws in my car for the same reason. Just need to remember not to throw them away accidentally. 🤦‍♂️

Wendy’s and a few other places have the entire beverage container made of plastic. So yeah, paper straws in those cases are a complete joke.

bjlockie We have metal straws in the house for the other user, but as I never use a straw (I also eat out very rarely), PP’s promise is irrelevant to me.

They are probably a biodegradable straw and technically not plastic. There are several things they can be made out from.

I rarely use straws, maybe if I grab a drink at the movie theatre, and the paper straws were fine. I didn’t even give it a second thought.

I rarely get drinks at restaurants.

I think the last time I had a milkshake at a fast food place, the paper straw was fine. I remember some of the early ones got soggy and became useless. But the most recent one I had was much thicker and robust. So it worked fine, it lasted.

It’s not so much how long it lasts but the texture. Sucking on wet paper is not pleasant.

Depends on the kind - some have paper texture and suck, but others are waxed or use a natural starch based varnish coating that provides a more plastic-like texture that is more pleasant. I noticed some of the fast food straws really sucked back on “day 1” and have improved drastically the last few years. Its still hit and miss though. At home I bought a 5000 plastic flexi straw box off amazon 2 years ago and we’re about ¼ of the way through it. I keep a ziploc bag of them in the car, wifey had some in her purse, and we have a dispenser with them at home on the fridge. As such - I rarely if ever am stuck using the paper ones - but sometimes I do use them when necessary (bubble tea for example).

I’ve never encountered an any of the “better” ones on the odd occasion I don’t have one of my glass ones with me. Q

Avernar I’m trying to remember where I encountered one not too long ago - sometime in the last month or two - it might have been the local Burger King - or possibly Harveys - can’t recall right now but since its a topic of discussion I’ll keep my eyes (and lips) peeled for where it was I noticed the “better” quality ones that don’t like stick to your skin or have that nasty paper texture.

I’ve had plenty since this silliness started and I’ve never had one where I’ve said, “oh, they figured it out!” Every one I’ve had I’ve hated. The last one I really disliked was at A&W.
