People have celebrated April 20 for decades by smoking weed or consuming THC-infused treats. In recent years, dispensaries and fast food restaurants have joined in on the festivities by offering themed promotions.
This year, 420 falls on Easter. While weed has been referred to as “the devil’s lettuce,” it’s not unlikely that some Arizonans will light up after their Easter church service, because the substance has been legal in the state since 2021.
Whether you partake or not, you probably know there’s a correlation between 420 and cannabis. Maybe you’ve heard that the origins of the holiday have something to do with a Bob Dylan song or a police radio code.
Here’s everything you need to know about how 420 came to be …
What is the meaning of 420?
April 20 is widely considered the “weed holiday.” Every spring, cannabis lovers celebrate their love of the intoxicating flower by consuming it, attending weed-themed events or taking advantage of deals at local dispensaries. In the United States, some marijuana enthusiasts also use the day to rally for legalization.
When did 420 start?
The most agreed-upon 420 origin story dates back to the early 1970s. A group of northern California high schoolers who called themselves “The Waldos” would gather at 4:20 p.m. to smoke. They chose the specific time because it accommodated after-school activities.
The timestamp became code for the act of smoking weed, and eventually spread beyond California with a little help from The Grateful Dead. Dave Reddix, a member of the Waldos, told TIME Magazine in 2017 that he worked as a roadie for bassist Phil Lesh in the 1990s. During a Grateful Dead show in Oakland, fans distributed flyers inviting people to “smoke 420” at 4:20 p.m. on April 20.
One of the flyers fell into the hands of a reporter at a popular cannabis publication. The flyer was printed and a new tradition was born.
Has Easter ever fallen on 4/20?
Yes, Easter Sunday and 4/20 have coincided several times before, predating the smokers’ holiday, and it will happen again in 62 years.
This year will be the 13th time Easter has taken place on April 20 since 1630, and it won’t fall on that date again until 2087, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. …
