Speeds and pricing are still core attributes of today’s home broadband services, but service providers are continuing to expand into other aspects of broadband focused on better Wi-Fi and an overall improved customer experience.

AT&T’s fiber platform already has speed on its side, but the operator is putting more focus on in-home Wi-Fi with this week’s launch of a new package called “All-Fi Pro.” The new package features a Wi-Fi 7 gateway, Wi-Fi extenders, and advanced form of ActiveArmor, an Internet security service that includes a home-side VPN. All-Fi Pro also provides AT&T fiber subs with the ability to upgrade their broadband devices every three years.

New perk for multi-gig fiber customers

To spruce up the value of its higher-end speed tiers, AT&T said it adding All-Fi Pro for no additional cost to its multi-gigabit fiber speed plans. Those customers will need to contact AT&T for the Wi-Fi 7 gateway installation, an official said.

AT&T fiber subs who subscribe to speeds of 1-Gig or less can purchase All-Fi Pro for an additional $25 per month. They also have the option to purchase package enhancements separately. For example, AT&T’s Extended Wi-Fi coverage typically sells for $10 per month and ActiveArmor fetches $7 per month.

It’s not immediately clear how many AT&T fiber subs are in line to get All-Fi Pro for no added cost. AT&T ended 2024 with 9.33 million residential fiber customers, but did not break out how many of them were taking the 2-Gig or 5-Gig speed plan. AT&T, which is scheduled to release Q1 2025 earnings results on April 23, declined to provide a more granular view of its fiber subscriber base.

All-Fi Pro is not currently available to areas served by Gigapower, the AT&T-BlackRock fiber joint venture that is focused on areas that fall outside of AT&T’s legacy wireline footprint, including Mesa, Arizona; Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania; Las Vegas, Nevada; and parts of Orlando, Florida.

All-Fi Pro is an upgrade to All-Fi, a package that’s complimentary to all AT&T fiber customers. All-Fi includes the basic version of ActiveArmor, unlimited data, access to AT&T’s Smart Home Manager App, and the option to add Wi-Fi extenders for $10 per month.

AT&T’s broadband device upgrade program for All-Fi Pro appears to be a nod to a device upgrade models that are common in mobile.

Per the fine print, the broadband device upgrade portion of the All-Fi Pro package requires that customers are in good standing for a minimum of 12 months to be eligible. HooRU Agreed 100%. It constantly baffles me how AT&T will dump money into TV ads and marketing for AT&T Fiber, perks for AT&T Fiber, promotional discounts for AT&T Fiber. But I can’t get AT&T Fiber no matter what because they have cherry-picked everywhere that they offer it, and still don’t offer it at all in many newer greenfield construction neighborhoods.

They wouldn’t have problems with uptake or need to spend anything on advertising or promotional discounts if they would invest that money in extending service to more areas than the tenement apartments where you have to live to be able to get it around here. If you live in a single family home, especially in the suburbs with underground utilities, forget it. You know, neighborhoods where people live who can afford to have the service. It’s 6 Mbps DSL or Internet Air for you. Go figure.

Do they offer AT&T Internet Air by you? I know it’s not as good as a cable/fiber connection, though.

telcodad They do, but it pales compared to wired broadband, even cable. The serving cell site is a mile or two away, but beyond LOS. We have mediocre mid-band performance here. B12 is fine, but the mid-band RSRP is good enough for the network to shift us to B2/66. Then upload speeds usually drop below 1 Mbps.

Yes, unless you’re very picky about your internet service (e.g., an intense gamer) whatever way can give you reliable service at at good price will work, whether it’s fiber, cable, DSL, FWA, satellite, etc.

ATT has so many new customer offers because it feels it’s subscription rate is lower than it wants in the areas where it is built. Their 2024Q4 report puts it at 9.3 million subscribers out of 23.9 million passings, or 40% penetration. It’s cheaper and quicker, with much better ROI, for them to add customers in areas already built out, compared to building out new areas for additional customers.

MacLeech I mean, they should know better when they only build in the worst parts of town where most serviceable households are on SNAP and utility subsidy programs for gas/electric, and the only communication service they have is a prepaid cellphone. 40% is probably the most penetration AT&T is going to be able to squeeze out of those areas, even throwing promos out and taking a loss on the service.

I’m not trying to sound ignorant. They’re targeting people with a premium product who are more concerned about how they’re going to pay for groceries and rent. It’s baffling that AT&T doesn’t understand that by now. It’s no wonder those addresses aren’t signing up for $60-80/mo fiber internet. If AT&T wants to improve uptake, they need to construct where customers who can afford wireline broadband live.

xpxp2002 the customers you’re complaining about that they’re building fiber to are the cheapest, quickest, and most dense areas they can build with the least amount of labor. They can service the most customers with the least amount of fiber. ROI tends to happen quicker.

The more affluent areas’ homes tend to be spaced further apart needing more fiber, more equipment, and more permits just to pass the customers. It takes longer and needs more labor. ROI takes longer. They also tend to get more complaints that may holdup construction, see the lawn fridge debacle.

SOP for these buildouts is get as many connected ASAP before initial funding runs out, equipment runs out, or plans change. Show early success to get later support.

I saw this in my OLAM earlier this week. I just bought myself a new Wifi 7 router this past week, earlier than I wanted to thanks to expected rising costs. Astound no longer included modem/WiFi for free, now $10, with the current new customer promotions. Even Spectrum has added the $10 fee to it’s base package this past year.

I have a sneaking suspicion that At&t may break out the WiFi charge from the included ONT equipment for more revenue. I hope I’m wrong but I wouldn’t be surprised.

Yeah, that seems to be the way these days.

For a long time, the only places to charge a fee for using a credit card were gas stations - usually 10 cents more per gallon.

Then some places starting offering a “discount for cash.”

Now a lot of places are charging a fee, usually anywhere from 2.5% to 3.5%, for using a credit card.

The claim being that their margins are so tight now that they can no longer absorb it themselves.

It’s back and now available for no extra charge to me. I tried to add it but they want to do a professional tech install, no charge. I’m good with my current 500 as it’s in pass-through anyways.

Is there any way to make sure I never, EVER have ActiveArmor enabled on my connection? I use my own router, and I’ve only ever heard about it being a source of problems.

I’m getting allfi they are having someone coming out to install it because they want to plug in the fiber to the back of it. Neighbor got it wow it’s a big router range is better too. Tech told my neighbor that they only have the big 620 now where we live
