Fluctuating upstream QAM and outage

Had a 3 hour outage overnight with no notification. Looks like all of the RF connectivity stayed up, but lost network as I got alarms from external monitoring and my RipeAtlas went down. Uptime on the modem is 675 hours or more.

I have also been seeing issues with my upstream QAM. Have 5 channels now but the QAM on each of them are always changing. Sometime they are all 64QAM, then at other times, they are random between 16QAM, 32QAM, or 64QAM like in the image.

I have had varying times when working from home the past few weeks with horrible latency at times. I do see a lot of fiber going in, maybe it is all being prepped for mid-split. Down side is, no one seems to know anything about what is going on. The only info I do know for a fact is that by this time next year, I will also have a choice of FIOS or Shentel’s GloFiber service in additional to Comcast. At that point, I will probably ditch Comcast and use the two fiber providers with one as primary and the other as a lower speed backup.

Connectivity has been horrendous today… Lots of PL, RF signals dropping.. My downstream power across the spectrum ranges from .8db to 5db. Upstream now has 3 of the 5 channel on 16QAM, one on 32QAM, and one on 64QAM. I cannot not even stay connected to anything for work..

Unless you can get one of the other providers to install today, you should open a ticket with Comcast (while it could be just you, it is more likely to be you and others).

Their site did show it is a wider issue.. But with all the fiber work going on, it wouldn’t surprise me if they borked something.

Seems more stable, but now upstream is maxing at 10Mbps. Right now I have no 64QAM upstream channels.

We have unjacketed hardline in our neighborhood. When the fiber installers came through they hung their ladders on the cable strand and damaged multiple spans causing issues. Temporary coax was run on the ground until a contractor could replace the hardline with jacketed. Initially it looked like Comcast was rushing to upgrade the neighborhood during the fiber install but they were repairing the damage caused by the fiber crews. The fiber install was a slow process so Comcast spent a good time fighting problems around here. I had DSL at the time and was unaffected.

While unjacketed hardline is more susceptible to oxidation, abrasion, and heat impacts, their RF performance (in the absence of actual damage) would be comparable. The fiber installation contractor is likely to get quite the bill from Comcast for the repair work (you broke it, you own the repair costs).

They are hanging a lot of fiber here. Seems like every time I go out and about, there is a new coil of fiber temp hanging of the line or a pole and new splice boxes with fiber to them laying on the ground..
