a new wave of toll fee scams

Back in August 2024, we warned about a relatively new type of SMS phishing (or smishing) scam that was doing the rounds.

Now a new wave of toll fee scams are working their way round the US. These attempts come as an unexpected text message linking to a website pretending to belong to one of the US toll authorities, like E-ZPass, The Toll Roads, SunPass, or TxTag.

The texts usually create a sense of urgency—a common tactic of scammers, by telling you there is only a limited time left to act or there will be dire consequences.

Over the past 4 months I have received 5 texts for Sun Pass some other undesignated Toll Alerts with links to some realistic Bogus Very Official looking imitation sites. So I called the Ligit phone numbers and after they searched their records no Toll Fees were Found.

No parking ticket texts, but did get an E-ZPass phishing text. #1 I don’t live in a state that utilizes the E-ZPass and #2 I don’t drive nor have I a driver’s license to suspend.

Got one of the EZPass texts the other day. I have two EZPasses (in-state discounts for two states), and the first thing I did was log into both accounts just in case some idiot made a duplicate of my plate. I figured it was fake, but checked anyway. Blocked, reported.

Rook NYC or MTA or whoever will absolutely find you and mail you a letter if you incur toll charges and don’t have an EZPass. They send a letter to the address of the registered owner of the vehicle. Used to get them for the ex. It’s the same process for red-light and speed cameras in NYC, I’d assume.

I have about 30 text messages from the scams stating that I owe tolls. It got so bad here that they have a message about them on the toll road signs now.

The EZpass scam made the network news this morning when one of the people got a text on his phone
None received here.
