Wow, I didn’t expect to see anything so significant so soon. Good for America, bad for Canada.

According to LinkedIn, the two Alliston, Ontario plants employ some 4,200 people but I can’t find any data on how many people at these plants this shift will impact. Surely if they are hiring more US employees to ramp up production in USA to produce locally there will be a reciprocal loss in Canadian employees.

Most of my thoughts on this are political in nature, so I’ll restrict those to the appropriate forum. I will, however, say that even the initially linked article said that they were considering it, not that they were actually going to do it.

HAH! Sounds like they’re trying to have their cake and eat it too, basically telling Trump what he wants to hear but at the same time telling Canadians not to worry. I hope for the benefit of people in Alliston that they can pull this off.

Industry Minister Anita Anand said this morning that she has been in contact with representatives from Honda and that the company is not currently considering moving any Canadian production to the U.S.

“We are aware of the unconfirmed reports of future changes to Honda’s production plans for Canada. I am in close contact with the company, and Honda has communicated that no such production decisions affecting Canadian operations have been made, and are not being considered at this time,” Anand said in a post on X.

A Japanese newspaper reported today that the auto giant was considering shifting some of its Canadian and Mexican operations to the U.S. in response to Trump’s tariffs.

Anand said she’ll be meeting with the CEO of Honda Canada later today.
