Posting stories from other sites

On DSLR the mods tried to keep folks from posting the entire story from other sites in their posts. No more than a couple paragraphs and a link to the story was requested. My feeble memory thinks part of that was copyright issues. What is the thought here? Is it OK to post the entire story from a website, possibly violating copyrights, in a post? There’s been all kinds of opinions about AI scrapers taking copyrighted stuffs on the ’net.

vaxvms Yes, quote a couple paragraphs at most and include the link to the article. If people want to know more of the article, they can click the link. Don’t ever post just the link, an article quote without the link, or the entire article.

Fair use excerpts unless story is very short (1 or 2 paragraphs) but links must always be provided.

DSLR (Silver Matrix) was the subject of a copyright lawsuit about 15 years ago.

But it was more of a nuisance suit, the company that sued DSLR had sued many other companies seeking to get payments for alleged copyright issues..

It was not a good business model, and the company that sued (Righthaven) eventually went bankrupt and ceased operations.

The case against DSLR was thrown out, I believe.

At a time when officials at the highest levels seem to not worry about the laws, it’s a little hard to worry about these mundane issues.

Point well taken though.

On July 13, 2011, U.S. District Judge Kent Dawson became the third federal judge to rule that notorious “copyright troll” Righthaven LLC lacked standing to sue over the alleged infringement of a Las Vegas-based newspaper’s copyrights in its published material. Previously, U.S. District Judges Rodger Hunt and Philip Pro ruled against Righthaven in their suits against alleged infringers, with District Judge Pro tossing in a fair use ruling as well.

Since early 2010, Righthaven has filed nearly 300 lawsuits on behalf of newspaper property owners throughout the country, including the Las Vegas Review-Journal and the Denver Post. It operates by surfing the web for online postings of content from its partner newspapers, then purchases the copyrights from the newspapers each time it uncovers an “infringement.”

I only post excerpts, but some stories are SO long (and complex!) that the excerpts end up being long too.

I will try now to limit myself to 3 paragraphs max, which was the oldtime DSLR suggestion.

Also to select a few key paragraphs, not to post 3 in a row.

Providing excerpts is fair use. Posting whole articles without attribution is not, especially in commercial uses.

I consider it good practice - and good manners - to provide attribution when posting others’ work.

Apart from the copyright issue, reposting entire articles is generally just lazy, Quote a couple of relevant paragraphs. Add some words of your own to explain why you’re bringing this up in BBF. Include the link.

There’s this thing called ‘html links’ specifically invented so you don’t need to copy everything everywhere :-)

What about posting parts of an article and not posting a link to the source?

I saw that a few times on DSLR, probably because the text was quoted from OANN or the gateway pundit.
The mods there seemed okay with it.
