Tshirt Rewarding existing customers with longevity discounts on existing services encourages them to trial new services. current “limited time” price discount for new customers ONLY just encourages churn and dissatisfaction.
The problem is the first company who changes from “intro pricing discounts” to “long term customer discounts” loses all new customers as people chase the cheapest price for the moment (it is all about the here and the now, not yesterday or tomorrow (your dog can explain it to you, if you speak woof)).
This is a problem many industries made for themselves. There is no easy way to dig themselves out of that hole unless the industry as a whole moves, as no one wants to be first to have to announce losing that many customers to their shareholders (working with the 2% churn rate every month across a year that would (could) go elsewhere that could mean a loss of close to a quarter of your customers for that first year looking for the best price today).
Some companies do try a same price for all strategy (and it is the approach I personally prefer), but that tends to work only if the price is not undercut by someone else’s intro price for essentially the same service.
Anyone who actually has a (demonstrable) successful approach to end intro pricing in a competitive market without impacting shareholder value has a great future in many industries. I know I am not that person.
