I’ve been watching ZapperBox for quite a while now. When the time, price (promo/sale?) and software release is right, then I will “pull the trigger” on it.

I just think it is sad that ATSC 3.0 is so screwed up that none of the big players will even consider building a tuner/dvr adapter for it. Even though the technical specs are better.

lesmikesell I think its more of a matter that they cant. Partly due to Encryption/DRM and just the generally increased costs of ATSC 3.0 enabled devices due to how the patents work and such, it’s probably just not worth it. Unless the government does like It did during the switch over to digital, offering free converter boxes, people are not going to go and buy a new TV and such. Without network TV tuners my setup wont work period and it would costs me a lot of money to get all of my TV’s connected to an antenna.

Maybe 5GTV might be the answer but I have a feeling that OTA TV is on deaths doorstep.

Donut417 I think its more of a matter that they cant.

But that’s intentional. Broadcasters (who developed ATSC 3.0) don’t want people to get the broadcasts over the air so they designed it to be as close to impossible as they could. The zapperbox guy is the only one even trying, and only because he knows there won’t be much competition. Broadcasters want to keep getting the rebroadcast fees from cable and streaming companies.

lesmikesell Thats why the FCC needs to claw back the spectrum. Allocate it to something else. Maybe 5G.

Donut417 Or just do what public standards groups are supposed to do and require all the patents involved to be released under reasonable terms.

ZapperBox cautions that version numbers and timelines are speculative, with firm dates only confirmed via its official release notes

For the time being, my OTA TiVo will handle my OTA needs.

It’s software that someone else controls, not totally impossible. I expect it to take longer - but meanwhile they also have a hardware client box.

The New ATSC 3.0 Tuner Has Limited Compatibility and Isn’t Currently Available to Purchase

Earlier this month, the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) held its annual convention in Las Vegas. There, electronics manufacturer ADTH announced a new NextGen TV ATSC 3.0 USB Tuner. The dongle is designed to allow Android, FireTV, and Google TV devices to receive TV channels broadcast in ATSC 3.0.

Unfortunately, there are already some issues with the newly released device.
