What Country?

There were people talking about leaving the US. Which got me thinking were would I like to go? Now, at 80 yrs old, I’m not going anywhere but I wondered what countries would people consider. I’ve been to about 16 countries. Two-thirds in Europe. My wife has dual citizenship Irish/American. So, I could become an Irish citizen. However, if I was to go anywhere, I think it would be England. Also, like the Netherlands, Switzerland and of course Ireland. Anyone have a country they could see themselves living in?

Paris . . . I’ve been there only once, in 1968 when I was 15 y.o. with my parents. I want to go back now if only for a visit and am hoping I can pull it off. It’s a great place but one thing I remember is that many French kind of resent Americans and don’t mind showing it. OTOH, some were very considerate. Two examples: my Mom stopped this Frenchman and asked by sign language of course where the post office was–he invited us to get into his car and drove us there! The other side: I needed a new pair of pants and we went into a local shop. After trying to help us for maybe five minutes with just a few questions, the lady got very impatient and just blurted out in her broken English “finish.” My thought was that I am not Finnish but American! Needless to say, we left without being able to get anything.

Yes, that’s why I mentioned we had a French speaker. I think it’s worse in Paris. We had a small office-plant in Geneva and some French came over everyday to work and they were great.

I never have understood why they are that way. That said, it’s been along time since I was in Quebec but I seem to recall the language thing there too.

Sparkchaser I never have understood why they are that way.

It’s likely that way not only in France but in many countries. In a way, you can’t blame them, since many Americans are so stupid that they think they are better than those in the host country and don’t even know enough to realize that they should be humble and courteous instead of being obnoxious. OTOH, my uncle was stationed in Japan right after the end of the war and he had nothing but the highest praise for the populace.

Been there once. Beautiful but the language is a killer. Similar roots to Irish which is also a killer but in Wales they use their language more. In Ireland there are certain areas that speak it but mostly English.

A few words I know. 😃 Amach, Craic, Bodhrán, Slán, Fáilte, some names of people.

My SIL is fluent in Irish but she also speaks French, German and a few others.

I have trouble with English.

One thing I really liked about Paris was listening to all the locals speak French, especially when hearing children speak it–it is certainly one of the most beautiful languages. But that would almost be a dealbreaker for me because despite what I’ve come to believe with my efforts is a great mastery of mine of English–and this is true despite the fact that when I graduated from high school I could barely write an English sentence–I’ve always seemed to lack the ability to pick up other languages, including French that I almost flunked in college!🤭

I know it’s origin from the Celtic. I know it’s referred to in some places as “Irish Gaelic” but all my family in-laws in Ireland who speak it, the schools that teach it, my wife when she had it in school refer to it as Irish and they still do.
