Asus routers and Frontier

Just curious - how many users here have Frontier fiber and use an Asus router? What model Asus router, and do you use AiMesh?

I have a pair of RT-AX92U units (one router the other AiMesh).

Secondly, has anybody with an Asus router have any luck with Frontier and keeping a stable connection? The only way I have been able to keep a stable connection with Frontier and my Asus router is by connecting my Arris NVG468MQ up to the ONT and then connecting the Asus router into the Arris’s DMZ.

I’ve used Asus with Frontier, not a great experience with rebooting the router or ONT. the router would have issues pulling an IP address with DHCP. I put a small UPS on both the ONT and router to reduce this issue. Rebooting the router wouldn’t fix the issue but physically turning off and on would fix it. I have since changed to a Firewalla Gold Pro and no issues. I had a Ubiquiti Edge X previously and it didn’t have issues either. It was just a problem with Asus.

ON a side note, there seems to be controversy about TP Link Routers. I've read about ASUS routers giving headaches, yes. I'm using the Frontier Eero Pro 6e for now. I don't exactly like how Frontier can see everything I do, but I don't have much to hide except my ugly butt.

I used to run an ASUS GT-AC2900 router on my Frontier fiber without issue. I eventually loaded it with Asuswrt-Merlin firmware to get more functionality out of it such as ad blocking and IP blocking and that worked pretty well. But, it was pretty easy to overload it with too many feature if you were not careful with what you enabled with that particullar router. The newer ASUS routers could handle all that now I'm sure.

I have since moved to a NanoPi R4S running OpenWRT. It's a 6 core ARM CPU so you can do what ever you want with it. I like that I am all modular now. R4S is the router which connects to a switch, which has two wireless access points connected to it. So now I can upgrade my wifi without having to replace my router and vice versa.

If you are technically inclined I would recommend running a device with OpenWRT as your router. They now have an official OpenWRT router that is ready out of the box.

In the past, no issues using a RT-AC68U (running either stock Asus or Asus-Merlin) with Frontier DSL for years. Just had to properly configure the Frontier Arris router to get the RT-AC68U to work correctly behind it.

Currently no issues using a RT-AX86U Pro (running either stock Asus or Asus-Merlin) with Frontier Fiber. Have it directly connected to the Frontier Fiber ONT. Currently running Asus stock 3.0.0.6.102_34336 firmware. Works fine. Not using AiMesh at the moment.

This is what Frontier initially installed: XGS-PON ONT FOX222 and ARRIS NVG468MQ. I removed the Arris and connected my Asus router direct to the XGS-PON ONT FOX222.

Still using the Arris here, but keep toying with replacing it.

I have the ASUS RT-AX88U PRO and after selecting wan then in DHCP query frequency, setting it to Normal it has worked great ever since.

I've used all three DHCP query modes and still deal with disconnects.

Don't know, but I have the 2G service.

Where is the model number found?
As a quadriplegic, I've never been close enough to it to see it, I'll have my son check.

Don't seem to have an issue with DHCP query frequency set to the Aggressive Mode default setting on an Asus router on Frontier fiber.

Aggressive caused my IP to change often.

ab4bd If you have 2G service then you either have a FOX222 or FRX523. If it's white then it's the FOX222. Otherwise if it's black, then it's the FRX523.

Having Frontier lay fiber here currently and supposed to be done on 3-1-26. Thought I’d take a look into this section of site and of course one of the first topics I see is this topic! I have an RT-AX58U with ASUS-Merlin firmware and want to connect it to the ONT when I get Frontiers service. Sure hope I don’t have any issues with this router.

cork1958 Shouldn’t be an issue. Have a Asus router running Asus-Merlin 3006.102.7 firmware connected direct to the Frontier ONT. Prior to the current Asus router had a RT-AC68U with Asus-Merlin firmware connected direct to the Frontier ONT when I initially switched from Frontier DSL to Frontier Fiber back in 2022.
