I haven’t tried the dumbswitch method since some time in 2019. It did work then, but it does NOT survive any power failures. If the link between external ONT (white box above) and switch goes down for any reason for any amount of time, 802.1x reauth has to take place. THIS METHOD IS NOT RECOMMENDED.
These days, from what I understand, any tech call involves upgrading the premises to a fiber jack with fiber going directly into a sfp in a bgw320 (or 620) if not already in this configuration. I imagine this applies to new service at a previously serviced location as well.
Is the address serviceable for 2gb or faster tiers? If so, you can sign up for that to get onto the xgs-pon network, then downgrade to 1gb (which is just a config change, no hardware changed). You can then go with a xgspon ONT sfp stick which doesn’t involve any 802.1x nonsense.
I went the gpon sfp route in part because I don’t want any fiber jacks installed - the bracket these use now doesn’t match up hole wise to what I already have on the wall. Don’t want more holes. I actually have a backup sfp module too in case the active one dies (made from finest chineseum). If both die, then the white box above is still functioning.
