Rough Riders and Buffalo Soldiers
Roosevelt’s volunteers, along with regular enlisted troops, both Black and white, The Buffalo Soldiers were Black Troops from the 9th and 10th Calvary. They fought in key battles such as the Battle of San Juan Hill alongside Theodore Roosevelt’s Rough Riders.
Buffalo Soldiers also served as some of the first National Park Rangers in places like Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks.
The nickname “Buffalo Soldiers”was given to them by Native American tribes, who respected their fierce fighting ability and curly hair, which resembled a buffalo’s coat.
