There were a couple of problems with Blu Rays for me. There was a while where I was buying a bunch of them, and have a small collection of TV show sets. But I’ve largely stopped.
The first problem was half-assed releases. They basically sold re-packaged DVDs with basic upscaling. After you’ve bought the same movie on VHS and DVD, buying it a third time for basically the same thing again starts to grate on you.
The copy protection was another issue. Maybe this was more my issue, and partially because I didn’t do my research before buying. But I had a DVD drive early on for my computer. I liked being able to pop one in and just play it on my PC. I thought I was going to do the same.
But Blu Ray needed special software. So there was buying the drive, then buying $50 software. And after about 2 years that software developer disappeared, and they didn’t make one compatible with Windows 10. So I bought a second software for $50. Both of them worked, but they were clunky software that was a pain to deal with.
Then I switched to Linux and the software wasn’t avaialble at all. There are methods of making it work, and for the most part it’s okay, and actually a better experience than the paid software was. But you can never guarantee that a new movie will work, or will have broken menus or something.
