Upstream congestion?

With Comcast increasing all low-split upload tiers to 35Mb on residential and business class, has anyone noticed any upstream congestion yet on nodes that haven’t been upgraded to mid-split? Each customer now gets ~ 42Mb of the total ~ 108Mb shared on the node. So far, so good for me it seems. (SB6190 modem)

MacLeech Neither of us have access to Comcast’s congestion stats, but I do find it difficult to imagine that very many homes are able to saturate mid-split upload for very long.

Maybe a neighborhood of Silicon Valley tech employees who are all power users and working from home?

I’m just not sure how common that is.

My node is just 108Mb upstream total and it’s not congested, even with everyone now on 42Mb upload.

Only if you don’t know how to disguise your public IP through VPN, proxy, or other methods. Then again there are plenty of torrents that aren’t subject to the xIAA ire, like in private torrent trackers.

I saw the most upstream traffic and demands for node splits in neighborhoods around colleges and universities, lots of file sharing there. I also saw upstream traffic and node split increases in more affluent areas, all those IoT devices traffic add up.

Yahoo messenger webcam back in early 2000s when i had a webcam that worked lol

Skype when first released around 2007 i believe it was, when it had a year free calls from PC to Mobile or Landlines lol, used that quite a bit back then

FTP file transfers, (not done anymore though lol)

The Above activites was all done on slow At&T DSL at the time lol, Got back on Cable Internet late 2014 and been on Cable internet since, with much faster speed than i ever imagined i’d be using, but my activities changed over the years for various reasons, first reason being much much more careful what i download these days, and such.

Secondly no one anymore to video conference with as friendships faded as our life changed and gotten older–(as that was mostly video conferencing in early 2000s with former high school classmates til around probably 2002 when that activity faded off)

Much more careful internet user these days than i was in the early 2000s, 2005 dummy me was like sure i’ll check out these files with Windows Live OneCare antivirus. Friend in Palace chat was like dude get these files to test the Antivirus properly, infected it badly afterwards though

Sure it detected the infected files, but dummy me shouldn’t have ran them on my old AMD Athlon XP 2500+ Processor at the time. caused such a bad infection–local PC place couldn’t fix it, of course this was a newer PC shop as i don’t drive in RL, and Family was like this closer one should be able to fix it.

Ended up being told its unfixable, and to have it working stable again, gonna have to replace all hardware, at that point i just wanted a working stable system, so i allowed it lol.

By the time we got Comcast around 2002, it was around 1.5Mbps, which before cable used to cost you nearly $1,000/month for a T1 line.

Before that, we had an ISDN line for a few years at 128kbps.

But that was back when websites were mostly text with a few images, and video streaming didn’t really exist yet.

Our first “family” computer (mostly used by me) was the TAM (Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh) from 1997, which Steve Jobs famously hated. When he returned to the company, he discontinued it and the price was slashed to $1,995 the next year, which is when my dad got it.

I pretty much just used it for school work and web browsing, and some games.

All the major sites have banners and ads that recommend them, plus kids are smart.

The ever-increasing upstream usage shows someone is using it.

BTW, while you were using the TAM, I was writing papers on WordPerfect, producing videos with Premiere, and trading individual mp3s (and other stuff) using IRC, DCC, Hotline, on Earthlink and MCI 56k dial-up connections (before the xIAA got into it) with the Power Macintosh 8500/132 I bought as a college sophomore. It replaced the Quadra 630AV I got from a friend a couple of years before, when left home, which I had been using BBSs, eWorld, then AOL on (where the username MacLeech was born). I had turned to Macs after my high school sophomore Pascal programming class let me use SE/30s all year. All through junior and high school a Leading Edge Model D2 was the home computer I used, typing papers on WordPerfect for DOS. I also bought and played all the Sierra Online games of the time, along with a ton of pirated games my friends and l traded around school on that thing. My first “family” computer was a Wang Professional my dad wrote me games for (he was a computer programmer) when I was 7. We had also been logging into BBSs and mainframes for a couple years at that point using a Hayes 300 then 1200 baud modem to play games on. My computer and online experience started early.
