Jed1 Well paying to use the app is ridiculous because you are already paying them for the Internet for the app to work in the first place, plus the video package that entitles you to the set of channels you opt in subscribing to.
We do have 1 DVR with DirecTV and use the app in all other rooms, so having one physical STB and using app in other rooms is not different to me, but some people may not want (or need) STBs at all. The one good feature with an STB is a remote with number buttons for direct channel entry.
Eventually customers will leave SECV for tv someday anyway. Its already accelerating and now pushing the TIvo stream which according to social media in my area, and word of mouth, has a terrible reputation.
Here’s an excerpt from a NextDoor thread posted 1 day ago, and keep in mind these kind of threads are posted often.
“Anybody else having trouble with their Service Electric? They came out and out that new TiVo system in that runs in WiFi and every night starting around 8:30 I get the circle of death until after midnight and can’t run anything. Didn’t happen before - not that it was ever great even then but this is ridiculous. Have a service guy coming out today but I’m sure he will say it has nothing to do with them. Thanks for any input!”
“Welcome to their streaming services. NOTHING is stable anymore.”
"Experiencing same problems
Their new system sucks . It is their problem and they better fix it. Also have a tech coming
The circles appear then the picture freezes. It sucks 🤬"
“ I think too many people are using it at the same time and SCTV doesn’t have enough signal”
“Tech just left and of course it’s not their system…it’s our router which we put in….always the same crap!”
“I have to keep calling about the same problem with tv and internet”
“New system does suck. We are having the same issues!”
I personally have no experience with this, but its quite clear if I was shopping for a video provider, if that was really still a thing these days, these kinds of posts would certainly turn me off. If SECV doesn’t want to do TV anymore, they just have to keep pushing this terrible product.
The Internet on the other hand is awesome. I have very low ping, great speeds and just much better routing vs comcast.
Speak of Comcast, if I were to price out the 5 year price lock with some TV services, once I get to the STB portion I can opt out of it completely and just watch on Xfinity Stream. It would be $163.29/m with 1100/300mbps Internet, Popular TV (125+ Channels)and 20 hours of DVR. Add $10/m to that price for 150 hours of Cloud DVR or $20/m for 300 hours of Cloud DVR.

More and more people, generally older people who still watch TV are getting fed up with TIvo (if they even switched) and now that Xfinity is in our area there are people switching. Don’t get me wrong, there’s still many people with just QAM based STB’s. My Dad is one of them. I think he has an RNG-110 and a DTA or two.
