380-million-year-old fossils dumped in landfill after N.J. college didn’t pay UPS bill, lawsuit claims
The lawsuit alleges William Paterson University’s unpaid invoices led around 200 marine fossils to be discarded in Tennessee.

It’s the fault of multiple parties, as I see it.

IRONY: That a massive fossil collection gets dumped in Tennessee of all places—Tennessee the state where skepticism about evolution led to the so-called Scopes Monkey Trial.

IRONY: If these fossils remain in the Tennessee landfill, they will be there millions of years from now for FUTURE paleontologists to find them.

Per the terms they do have the right to either sell it or destroy it, after trying to get in touch with the shipper within a reasonable amount of time.

It would depend on the reasonable amount of time. Plus the fact that there are other packages that they did the same thing as well.

If I was that guy, I would be looking for the different landfills that they could have been taken to. They could recover some of it. Or it could have been burned already and it is gone.

The school (William Paterson University which is a state school here in NJ) does have programs in both Anthropology and Archaeology.

Maybe he and some students can travel down to Tennessee for some field work.

Seriously.

I wonder if some workers along the way (at the UPS facility, or at the dump in Tennessee, opened up some of the numerous UPS boxes wondering if anything good was inside.

If so they got quite a surprise.

Crazy that UPS sends unwanted boxes to a landfill.

By contrast, all the airline companies send lost items to the “Unclaimed Baggage” company down in Alabama. It is a huge store, open to the public and also Online. I’ve bought some cellphones from them.
