The majority of Berks County PA- if not in Windstream fiber pockets. Verizon said they might bring FIOS to the area in 2009. 16 years later it never came. The tax money was taken, but everything’s copper here.
I can’t even find out how to order landline or dsl. I know there’s old subs still in the neighborhood. They had to fix some splices down the street because that neighbor had terrible hum and static on his phone lines. They put in a few green peds to hold some new copper splices. Otherwise it’s all direct bury copper. Had they used conduit back in the day, maybe they would have had a chance to blow / pull fiber through it, alongside the copper. Nope it would be a full excavation project to bring FIOS in, so that’s maybe part of why it was never done. Comcast showed that’s possible. We only had Service Electric Cablevision and then in 2022 Comcast dug us all up and installed a new HFC DOCSIS 3.1 network. Now we have two cable companies, so maybe Verizon thinks it’s too crowded and not worth the effort. In fact wherever there is only one coaxial cable company in the area, Comcast is building another coaxial cable system alongside it. Both underground and aerial installs.
The western part of the county has a new entrant to the playing field. Fastbridge Fiber. They won’t make it to my neighborhood, but north and west of the city of Reading (and soon the city according to a press release)- another option. Yeah I think Verizon will just sell to someone else or abandoned the system. The market can only hold so many players.
A few miles from here in an aerial section, there’s a phone splice case with all the copper wires hanging out. Looks like vomit pouring out of something, frozen in time.
