Cable tech pioneer takes aim at wireless DOCSIS
John Chapman, a former Cisco exec and DOCSIS pioneer, is helping a startup called Air Wireless pursue its plan to help cable operators tap into existing DOCSIS back-office systems to support fixed wireless access deployments.

John Chapman has seen DOCSIS grow up from a single-channel technology, to one that uses channel bonding to deliver gigabit speeds with DOCSIS 3.0, to today’s focus on symmetrical multi-gig speeds with DOCSIS 4.0.
He’ll now have a front seat as DOCSIS explores yet another frontier: wireless.
Chapman, a former long-time Cisco Systems exec and DOCSIS pioneer, has been tapped to serve as chairman of a newly formed global technology board at Air Wireless, a startup that is initially focused on a wireless platform underpinned by the same back-office systems that power today’s wired DOCSIS networks.
The idea is to give cable operators a way to deploy fixed wireless access (FWA) networks that take advantage of operational and business support system (OSS/BSS) platforms that are already in place. Air Wireless believes its platform can apply to a wide range of relatively low-cost residential and commercial use cases, including rural and urban buildouts, network expansions, services tailored to multiple-dwelling units (MDUs), private data systems and disaster recovery systems.

Chapman, who has a similar advisory role at Technetix, believes that wireless represents a “natural fit” for DOCSIS and that it provides cable with a gap-filler for certain deployment scenarios that are well-suited for FWA, without having to resort to more expensive fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) or hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) builds. …
