Windows 11 Question

I recently applied updates to Windows 11 24H2 and seem to have noticed a change.

When I wake up the computer from “sleep” it shows the Start screen. I don’t remember it working this way this in the past.

I’m not really complaining but just wondering if anyone else has noticed this.

When you say Start Screen, do you mean the Lock screen where you log in?

Still not getting your question. When you say “Start screen” do you really mean “Desktop”? That’s where I land when I unlock my system. If you want it to wake to the Lock screen first there should be a security setting for that.

I’ve fully embraced Windows Hello and use a facial recognition camera to unlock Win 11. It’s a lot easier. You just have to spring for a decent camera to make it work right and when it unlocks it takes me right to the desktop.

Or, you can do what I do. Enter blank in the PW field. Settings> Accounts> Sign-In Options> Password. Then you skip everything and go right to the desktop. Windows forces you to enter a PW to setup Windows Hello, but it can be disabled after setup. I do have my own protection. I use Disk Password Protection which blocks any boot-up and hides the disks I want hidden.

I use the old netplwiz command to do that for my mom’s laptop. I guess your method is the GUI version of that.

Do you know if “netplwiz” works under Windows 11? Might be nice as an option.

A while back, I helped one or two friends use it under Windows 7 for auto login. They just did not want to be bothered to log in.

From reading that UMA Technology item, it sounds like you’d have to make up a 3D model of that face or make a latex mask ala Mrs. Doubtfire: 🙂

Not sure what I started here . . .

Sometimes I leave my computer running and go away for a couple of hours.

When I return the screen is dark, I then touch a key, and see the Desktop with my usual icons and taskbar, etc. I also see the Start menu, which is the same menu as if I had touched the Windows key.

Prior to Windows 11 24H2 I don’t remember seeing the Start menu in this situation.

Hope this is clearer (but probably isn’t).
