Well, I was hoping STIR/SHAKEN would cut down on the robocalls, but they seem to have gotten WORSE! I have two lines, one residential, the other business. I have an Asterisk/FreePBX system connected to both of them. The residential line is a real copper pair back to the CO, the business line is VOIP to copper CO circuit to the Asterisk system.
I like this as there is no IP vulnerability to this system. The residential line has no caller ID, as you have to pay extra for that. The Spectrum VOIP line does as it is free. But, in both cases I don’t get the full ID packet, so really don’t know where spoofed calls come from. And, nearly everything IS spoofed.
One quirk of the Asterisk system is that it waits for the first two rings to get the caller ID packet, then takes the line off-hook and provides a synthetic ring tone. The click and continued ringing seems to make most robocallers start the hang-up process, so when I answer the line I get silence followed by a dial tone. Well, I didn’t really want to talk to them anyway! But, this is a MAJOR pain, as I still have to stop what I’m doing and answer the phone!
I don’t know if there is some kind of filtering that can be turned on on these lines, but I am not aware of how to do that. Cell phones do have some filtering features that you can turn on.
But, SOMETHING more HAS to be done! I get at least 10 calls a day, maybe more.
