"Best” modems right now?

Before I make a new thread, I thought I’d ask here if there are a few consensus “best” modems right now? This would be paired with a 400/100 Mbps plan to start. My main criteria are:

Mid-split support
Low latency support (do any COAM modems support this yet?)
Inexpensive
(reasonably) stable
Easy access to the modem diagnostics (logs, channel strength, etc.)

The closest you are likely to get is Hitron CODA56, it hits 3 of your 5 criteria.
fwiw I do not believe there is a current 400/100 plan

I don’t believe any of the retail modems are on low latency yet. I believe they would also have to update the firmware on the modem to support low latency. According to a article I read, it should be happening soon. Of course they could of ran into problems and it got delayed. I would say the best all around DOCSIS 3.1 modem in my opinion is the Netgear CM3000, but it’s not inexpensive. I personally have the CODA56, have had zero issues for the 1 year 3 months I’ve owned it. The down side, access to the modem diagnostics is not easy access. And some people don’t like the Puma 7 chipset, because of past Puma 6 chipset issues.

EnerJi CODA and CODA56 are the only things that meet the low cost requirement. The Netgear CM2500 and CM3000 are probably the “best” as they are broadcom chipsets instead of PUMA like the Hitron modems.

According to the post you linked the current plan should be 400/150, even better!

Thanks for the modem suggestion. The Coda56 misses on low-latency support and easy access to diagnostic page, right? Might be worth it for the price. Xfinity in my region (NW) has a killer promo of 400/150 for $25/month which I’m considering (looking to save some $$).

No, I believe the CODA56 does support Low Latency DOCSIS.

I think the 2 criteria HardlyWorthit was talking about that the CODA56 didn’t meet was “(reasonably) stable” and “easy access to diagnostic page.”

I work for a broadband company and we have used a variety of Hitron modems & MTAs telephone internet combination modems. And they have stability issues because of the puma 6 and puma 7 chips sets in the modems. My experience is install the modem it works for a while and sooner or later it will intermittently drop in and out.

True, but it seems worth it to go to 400 Mbps (for just $5/month more) to speed up occasional large file downloads.

I have the CODA56 and beside randomly rebooting every 30 days or so (according to the logs), it works very well. I also see it’s a recommended modem on Comcast’s lists now. I’m on the new 1100/300 (Gig) plan and it handles that easily, though I can’t actually get over 1 Gbps because of my local network setup.

I used the CODA56 until Monday (switched to fiber) and it was a very stable modem. I had pretty much zero problems with it for the year and two months I was using it. So I highly recommend it!

I’m currently using a Netgear CM2050v (I’ve owned it for a while) because I have Comcast Digital Voice. I have a Netgear Wi-Fi 7 Router.

I do not have the CODA56. I was watching discussions on DSLReports because my modem at the time was a (very reliable) Motorola docsis 3.0. A user had a CODA56 that was being intermittent and he/she decided to take it apart to see if he/she could figure out why. What he/she found was that there was a fabric heat sink sort of like NvME drives use between the chip set and the metal frame of the modem. The metal frame functioned as part of the heat sink. The fabric was failing probably allowing the chipset to run hot and become intermittent under load. He/She replaced the heat sink fabric and the intermittent problem went away. That’s what I remember anyway.

My Coda56 is the one that needed a better heat sink. It’s been running fine for the last 10 months with an old Pentium III heat sink. I did post about the issue on the LTT forums, so if you want to see pictures you can go over there:
