You either have to pay an extra $5-$10/month for the privilege with some carriers or if you pay off the remaining balance it doesn’t at all factor in the phone you traded in so doing that means you simply gave the carrier your trade-in for free.

Astyanax My sister is one of these people. She can get XYZ for free, she doesnt care or read the TOS on these deals. She hits up the free phones when ever she can. Me I bought my iPhone 16 directly thru Apple. Yeah I paid full price, but I can move carriers any time I want, that mobility is worth the extra I paid.

I got the 16 pro and it’s my first paid-in-full phone. I usually did the “marriage” but it was just for 2 years in the past. This last time it was 3 years with AT&T and it was painful. I had no problem with their service but I wanted to upgrade and knew I just had to suck it up until the very last payment.

This time I too bought directly from Apple. My rookie mistake though was not taking advantage of their trade-in offer to reduce the cost. I thought I’d get more for my phone selling it on E-bay but after their hold-up final value fees and the trouble of listing and shipping it it wasn’t worth it.

I did my upgrade though the apple website but went with carrier financing. I traded in my iPhone 13 Pro Max, for the iPhone 16 Pro Max.

Got 400 trade in credit. I didn’t have to provide anything up front since the trade in was considered my down payment. I have about 500 left to pay it off. The one thing I was expecting but didn’t happen and I don’t know if this was a screw up or not, but the phone is completely unlocked.

I had some concerns about that since my 13 Pro was paid off and I had the house phone ported to consumer cellular. In order to add the number I had to pay off my 13 Pro to have it unlocked to add the second line.

This time, I was able to add the line easily onto the new phone. I checked the settings and the phone has no sim restrictions. I actually got an unlocked iPhone this way. Granted I don’t plan on changing carriers at this time, but if I wanted to, I could and stop paying on the phone. LOL.

I’m not going to do that. But I was actually shocked to find that the phone was unlocked and that I can use any carrier, even though I did the T-mobile upgrade, but I purchase it from Apple.

I know if I did the purchase directly from T-Mobile, that the iPhone would have been locked. So this worked out..

Makes me wonder if you purchase the device directly from Apple when you are on T-mobile if the phones come unlocked.

This also makes me wonder what would happen if you did this with a different carrier. So I think from now on, I am going to order my phones through apple using the carrier financing.
