This may end up being good news at some point. If the miscreants keep doing this after having been paid, at some point, eventually, people may start getting the idea that it isn’t helpful to pay. Stop the ransom payments, and it makes data theft/encryption less rewarding. Unless the data are so valuable that they can still be sold on to someone else later (as this trove certainly is).
The problem in this case is that they have at least one payment, may collect more, and still release some or all of the data. Something that rewarding is sure to be repeated.
It also deserves to be repeated: if the bean counters would stop skimping on security, throwing everything, including the kitchen sink, into “the cloud”, and skipping proper backup procedures, they may not be backed into the corner where they feel payment is the only way out, when someone invariably falls for one of these scams, or some clever miscreant leverages a zero-click and makes off with their data.
