Just switched to Fiber

I just posted a farewell in the Xfinity forum, might as well post a hello here from Miami, FL.

Switched yesterday; so far happy with it. Time will tell if it’s stable and reliable! I can’t believe I have a gigabit both up and down, and sub-5ms latency. It’s like a dream.

The install went well; the tech ran the fiber through the attic and put the wall plate exactly where I wanted it. After being told techs don’t do that, I was happy to be mistaken. Gave him a nice tip for his effort; these guys work hard.

I’m running the 320 in passthrough mode with a Linux-based router. Everything started working right away without issue! I was worried a bit about being forced to use the ISP provided router but it’s been no big deal.

Anyway, onwards!

I’ve had it for a few of years now and it’s been absolutely rock solid. Literally the only time it’s been out that I can remember is when the guy blew up his RV in Nashville. They did go up $20/month two years after I cancelled DirecTV because I didn’t get a discount for having more multiple services.

InstaGator I heard that the fiber goes all the way to the central office without any active equipment in the field, so it’ll stay up even during widespread power outages if you have a local source of power.

Been reading about PONs and they’re absolutely fascinating. I’m glad to be using the second best home broadband tech instead of the third. 🙂

(Dedicated fiber pair to a switch port is still the best but that costs a fortune)

PON is great and they’ve mastered its implementation. I studied fiber in college back in the 90’s and until Frontier came to my city here I never got it, despite knowing how to fuse and run OTDRs and the like. That equipment back in the day was much harder to work with, now things are easy peasy in comparison (fusing spicles is still hard work and only certain techs do it).
