Ok, I want to note to you that I’m a Linux user of 5 years, but I have a question about MS OFfice.

How do I figure out what version of MS Office I want from a gray market seller? I’m talking MS Windows.

Uses would include website writing, personal data handling, Charts and Tables, resume work (cover letters also), writing to government and businesses, and personal journaling.

I don’t presently have a Windows system (well, I have 2 old computers with it) but I hope to buy a Windows box for the occasional use, but Linux Mint will remain my daily driver. Besides, I don’t game and that seemed to be one of the main reasons for Windows.

Also, Office for Windows 11, what about version compatibility?

And also, license limitations: Can any license permit use on more than one computer?

Finally, what gray market license source is good? I simply cannot justify spending 200 or whatever for a license that I will rarely use, Libre Office has been good for me, that I’ve run into format problems with others using my docs and editing them later on with MS Office.

By knowing what version of Windows you have. Office 2016 is the last one that works with 8.1, subsequent Office releases (2019 and newer) require Win 10 or 11.

HooRU Can any license permit use on more than one computer?

May be possible in theory, but may not be possible in practice since you’re likely get an oversubscribed volume license key that require “phone activation”, but they’ll do it for you and send you a second key for that.

Not really answering your question but it’s all I know. 🙂
I’m using a genuine Office 2007. It was used on Win 8. Now it’s on Win 10 and Win11. I use Word, Excel and PowerPoint without problems.

Wow, I thought I was really behind using Office 2013 on my Windows 10 PC.

I’m not a “power” user, so I see no reason to purchase a newer version as long as it continues to work. 😉

I can confirmed this too with my 2007 SR3. in my 64-bit W10 Pro. PC. I’m glad W11 can do it too. I don’t need the new fancy features in the newer versions. I also have updated LibreOffice just in case.

I have purchased licences from StackSocial and they have worked for both Mac and Windows. As has been said, make sure you get a version that works with your Windows version.

Even among people all using Microsoft Windows, format problems arise because they use different versions of Microsoft Word / Office / 365 / online / … ( or different macros, fonts, … )
For Linux, there’s LibreOffice, or OnlyOffice, or WPS, or GoogleDocs …

Aside from UI changes, revision numbers, the subscription nature of 365, and the artificial OS lockouts on newer Office versions, I don’t think there’s a whole lot difference between various Office versions. (2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, 2019, 2021, etc.) Older versions will usually run on newer OSs, but newer version can’t be installed (at least not without significant trickery) on older versions of Windows.

I recently made a mistake of buying 5 office 2019 licenses and finding out that O2019 cannot be installed on Windows 8.1. Supposedly, all one needs to do is to tell the installer that it’s running on Windows 10, but so far I didn’t have much luck with the instructions.

Lastly, because it’s subscription based, Office 365 is usually not a good idea for home users.

I have it on all my machines and it works and updates fine with no issues. If you have Win 10 or 11 it’s silly not to use it. Not sure how compatible it is with older Win versions.

I have Office 2024 on 3 Windows 11 computers. Do NOT rent Office 365 or whatever they call it now. I have click to run on all computers. I don’t use deprecated software.

I think not using deprecated SW is most important for browsers and anything directly related to internet access, or content accessible from the internet, and then OSs.

Unless you regularly open questionable office files, the risk of a deprecated office suite is much lower than any of the above.

I bought MS Office 2010 (Home and Student) back in 2011.

Works fine on Windows 7, Windows 10 and Windows 11. I use Excel and Word almost everyday.

I see no reason for me to upgrade to the newer versions.

I mostly agree with the people above who said buy don’t rent. However, the rental version may be good for a small family where three or four people all need to use Word, PP or Excel.

One reason to upgrade would be security related updates – a software released in 2010 is not likely to have fixes for exploits found after 2022. That can be an issue if you’re opening attachments from unknown sources.

There are also some extra features, but those are probably irrelevant to the majority of home users.

Even them the rental doesn’t make a whole lot sense. I’m not sure of the licensing terms, but if you have an actual retail copy I believe it can be installed on more than one machine, even if it’s against the licensing terms. Of course if the same key sees, for example, 100+ activations, it will probably get blacklisted very quickly.

Support for Office 2013 ended on April 11, 2023 and there will be no extension and no extended security updates. All of your Office 2013 apps will continue to function. However, you could expose yourself to serious and potentially harmful security risks.

There have been a few cases when MS provided security updates for EOL-d products, but it’s not common.
