is this new speed upgrade a phased rollout,because i'm still not seeing it.just rebooted my S33 modem and still getting 353down and 23up on the connect more plan?

cypherstream Comcast has been losing internet customers since late 2022 and Charter since late 2023. Neither the lower cost plans or higher speed plans have stopped those losses, yet. Must be a lot of poor people to stop 20 years of gains every quarter.

Meanwhile, even with the complaints seen about TMO FWA, they (along with Verizon FWA and ATT FWA) have been gaining customers during that same time frame. Scroll back a few more years and cables’ internet growth hit a plateau around 2021 when FWA started their gains. 4 years of quarterly reports from multiple companies dealing with 70+ million internet subscribers have been painting a clear trend.

Maybe when FWA growth outstrips their capacity and widespread performance issues become a bigger issue will the customer growth flip flop again.

BTW, Comcast’s internet revenue has been growing while its internet subscriptions have been falling, so either it’s running MUCH more efficiently while they spend more during upgrades or the remaining customers are spending more on the service (aka not many are changing to the $30 tier).

MacLeech I’m less talking about fixed wireless, and more talking about people trying to rely on only their smartphones, or using them as a hotspot. Which it seemed like you were talking about, one bill to save money. For most people, that’s impractical.

I don’t understand why someone would pick fixed wireless (more expensive and less reliable) over Comcast prepaid for $30, other than people who don’t live in a Comcast market.

It’s mostly lack of awareness it even exists, since when you type your address into Comcast’s website, you’re only shown postpaid options.

If they marketed it heavily, they’d probably get a large number of postpaid customers switching to prepaid, which they don’t want either.

They want to steal customers away from fixed wireless, not have customers downgrading to cheaper plans in large numbers.

MacLeech Yes I see that already in NextDoor and local Facebook community groups. There are some people who say they use T-Mobile home internet. We have a few employees that use it as well and I know because we have to put them on a special VPN profile that limits their MTU to 1300.

Comcast is trying so hard to get customers that they are expanding into new areas. That’s working too because in our new markets we’ve seen many social media posts with people saying they switched and are working fine. Taking my dogs for a walk in our neighborhood its clear that those who switch have a bubblier “Xfinity” branded house box at the side of the home near the electric meter. It’s certainly keeping SECV and Windstream in check with discounts. Now we have ISP’s competing for buisness.

I myself would NOT want a wireless provider for home internet. Heck AT&T was down from last thursday until about Monday night working on the tower. We only had service where we had Wifi, or drove further enough away to catch another tower.

They could easily stop and reverse that if Comcast started heavily advertising their $30 plan, and offering it to new customers alongside the postpaid tiers, or mentioning it to existing customers when they call in to cancel their service or complain about high prices.

Right now, it’s pretty hidden on their website and not offered when you type your address into the main website.

Charter doesn’t offer a cheap prepaid tier at all, so I’m not surprised by their losses. They aren’t even trying to compete with fixed wireless right now.

Yup, Comcast has publicly bragged about increasing ARPU to offset TV and Broadband subscriber losses, and one of the ways they are doing this is by not giving the current customer deals. Not sure how true it is, but one “employee” said (on Reddit, so yeah) they were also getting wise to the name change scheme within the same household, but no idea how they would stop that. I know some people who just lie and say they are divorcing to get the deal if questioned, so not sure how that will all play out. Way too much drama and trouble IMO, will stick with Prepaid until D4.0.

EVERY residential service oversubscribes. Whether customers see any problems with it or not is dependant on how well the provider can add bandwidth faster than actual utilization consumes it.

Comcast WAS having issues with that, so they limited their speeds (especially upload) for years. The upgrades they’re doing adds quite a bit of bandwidth to the last mile while freeing up space, power, and HVAC capacity in their hubs. They also have a path for even more bandwidth in the future.

Cell can add more frequencies, wider channels, more sectors, and more towers amond other methods. Some are easier than other to add, but they’re not an option anymore depending on the area.

Dropping revenue and subscribers while going through a period of needed higher capital expenditures is a death spiral companies really try to avoid.

I don’t see how NOW prepaid is hidden? It’s all over there main webpage. Maybe more people would be willing to switch to NOW prepaid. If they included a better Gateway, instead of being stuck with that old XB3.

Some times it’s not about the price. Some times people are just done with doing business with a particular company for a variety of reasons.

Considering the broadcasters are trying to push ATSC 3.0 and a whole lot of people are against it, included the cable companies. I think they should just kill broadcast TV and sell the spectrum to the cellular providers.

Wireless spectrum isn’t an unlimited resource either.

Fixed wireless is far more bandwidth limited than cable or fiber will ever be.

Fiber is already doing 10Gb symmetrical today, with ease. While fixed wireless is capped at 300/20Mb to avoid cell tower congestion lol

It may be due to recent losses in HSI subscribers in many of those low-split areas to Fixed-Wireless and Fiber competitors, freeing up upload bandwidth on those nodes.

I know that around 15 years ago, when Verizon brought FiOS to our development, many of my neighbors signed up and my Comcast speed test results improved greatly during the peak usage hours of the day. 🙂

When you click on “Internet” and type in your address to check for service, only postpaid options are listed. They don’t list “NOW” alongside the postpaid options.

I agree, only about 10% of people in the US watch OTA TV.

That is a waste of billions of dollars of valuable spectrum.

But it’s not speedy 5G spectrum, it’s slower low-band spectrum in the range of 470-600MHz. Great for rural areas and indoors.

Wow, it looks like there giving 300 Mbps upload across the board to all there Business Internet tiers. With the exception of there Essential 150 Mbps tier. Looks like the download speeds remained the same.

They haven’t updated the consumer interface side yet. Here the FCC Broadband labels still list 35mbps upload for each business plan, and I used two different addresses I 100% know are mid split systems (both brand new HFC areas to Comcast in the last year). One in Keystone PA region, one in Freedom PA region.

Yea I don’t why they have there consumer interface like that? But ones you click the SHOP NOW button, and enter a Mid-Split address. It will display the updated speed tiers, offers, and Broadband labels for that address.

SECV showing service is interesting. Maybe to get ideas putting their own meters on the line. Testing equipment, speeds, latency. That market there is still Keysone PA so it’s 30ms out to major sites. SECV can do major sites in 20ms or less (5-10ms on their PON). Maybe that’s where SECV got the idea for upstream PMA (Profile Management Application).
