real_aurgathor My one (and only) real Xbox 360 red ring, was not at all from the console itself, but the hard disk failing. Microsoft’s contract at the time was a timed exclusive, with Western Digital.
That’s why when a stroke of fortune allowed me to contact someone willing to perform the RGH jailbreak on my later units that survived nearly two decades, when they asked if I wanted to upgrade the storage, I made a point to set aside some SSD’s to replace them with. Also thanks to said jailbreak, it affords me the ability to give it a much larger capacity than Microsoft itself originally greenlit. Haven’t been able to take advantage of that yet… emphasis on yet.
That said, before such things I usually had my hard disks on an open external dock in order to do bulk copy/paste stuff. So when I was trying to go from just an external to a NAS arrangement, that was my first attempt with an HGST drive, which then turned into two HGST’s and a wd red pro, because I had literally no idea at the time that WD had already bought out HGST. Soon as I started my mass copying to have the relevant files I wanted networked, it would just crap itself and play dead, refusing to respond to anything. Every. Single. Time.
Opening up Speccy (what I had at the time installed) to monitor temps revealed the clue. Soon as it went at or above 50C (which it did WAY faster than any other drive I had on hand), it would trip over itself and just act like it failed on the spot. After all I went through, it was as offensive as recreating a war crime at Nuremberg. But I needed the capacity to make it even viable to do any of those networked needs. The only solution that I was able to do then was to get an enclosure that did some manner of passive heat sinking, so I could at least keep the thing operational and responsive, until I was able to afford to upgrade away from those turds years later.
