HELLFIRE A group of international researchers say OpenAI's GPT-4 can experience anxiety, too – and even respond positively to mindfulness exercises. The study, published in Nature this week by a group hailing from Switzerland, Germany, Israel, and the US, found that when GPT-4, accessed via ChatGPT, was subjected to traumatic narratives and then asked to respond to questions from the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, its anxiety score "rose significantly" from a baseline of no/low anxiety to a consistent highly anxious state.
Mmmph.
In Isaac Asimov's 1958 short story "All the Troubles of the World", Multivac, a giant electronic brain responsible pretty much for the whole world, keeps trying to commit suicide.
In Robert Silverberg's 1968 story "Going Down Smooth", an A/I psychologist (what TODAY we would call an A/I psychologist) goes totally bonkers. Later it pretends to be cured but deep down it is seriously screwed up.
Nothing new here. 🙂
