I just had some and it's nothing like the proper thing that used to be made. No Wood Ear, No Shitake, No Flower, no Bamboo Shoot. They've started adding broccoli stems to everything now.
When I resided in Houston I had a friend that owned a premier Chinese Restaurant and they made stuff more old world style, the Kung Bo was made with Szechuan "peppercorns" (a flower), and an oil blanched slurry, and pan roasted peanuts. Now with peanuts being an allergy item, they just toss them out of a can.
I get tired of my own cooking, but I pine for the good old days and when I cook, I try to make these things the proper way from the old days. My pantry has stuff like black bean paste, five spice, and oyster sauce. Now with the freaking stupidly thought up scheme, it might hamper my supplies.
