When I was in my late 20s a BMW 318i was my dream car that I could of course not afford at the time having just finished law school and trying to get established financially, but I never did get one but once I got on my feet a little I got an ’87 Mazda 626 and ’86 B2000 pickup, both of which I loved–see here–but later was really impressed with my first Accord, a 1990 5-speed, after which I went on to own three more, a ’93 EX, ’98 DX, and my current ’09 LX. I hope that there are no pitfalls this time in posting about Hondas, but I’ve had the very best of luck with all the Accords except the ’90 that while otherwise a very good car the clutch was gone at about 60,000 miles. I totalled the ’93 and ultimately sold the ’98 to get the current ’09 that is now just short of 170,000 with no problems. The best thing I did with the ’09 was get a set of the third party wheels the same as those that came on the EX that generation and that really makes a difference in its appearance in my view. I got them for about $100 apiece vs. Honda’s $400 apiece price and since they were 17″ instead of the original 16″ I had to get new tires, but it was time for them anyway with 90,000 miles on the originals. Whole thing cost me only about $800.
Honda did have some problems with these Accords but I manage to escape all that. The first was the problem with the automatic transmission on the ’98 to ’02 generation that had a very high failure rate that I was able to avoid because mine was a stick. The other problem they had was with my current ’09 generation was with the rear brakes wearing out at 20,000 miles (mine did too, of course). Because of this, Honda agreed to pay everyone for the first replacement with a redesigned version that fixed the problem. So I got the free replacement, and they are still servicing the car now at 170,000 miles.
