A commercial AM Radio Station in the U.S. can only be licensed for a max of 50 KW ERP.
There's a common term for AM Stations broadcasting at an ERP of 50 KW, "Blowtorch".
I used to be able to clearly receive WLS-AM 890, Chicago illannoys, in Middle Park Colorado, at night.
I'll use Winter Park, CO as a specific locale for reception...
given the distance from WLS-AM's Broadcast Towers in Tinley Park IL, curvature of the Earth and some VERY TALL Mountains between Winter Park, CO and Tinley Park, IL, those Clear Channel Stations are called "Blowtorches" for good reason.
Not quite sure where your getting you knowledge, or flawed info from, but a commercial AM Radio Station is, in fact, a Non Directional Beacon (NDB) for Aviation Navigation purposes.
Now, non-voice NDBs specifically for navigation use, are limited to 300 Watts ERP.
ETA: Just got off a call with a close friend who has an extensive Broadcast Radio background and they got a chuckle out of your post. As soon as I mentioned "Blowtorch", they went off into a much more technical humorous rant on those stations, than I posted here.
