Sorry if I may be a little bit of a novice but could you explain this a little more? Would this be some sort of workaround to the issues that is the subject of this thread that ManifestV3 will present? How would one accomplish that?

Sparkchaser I've been getting that error for two weeks. I was asking to whipe my cache and it was better for a little while. I use Opera in Linux. Frontier provides ad blocking.

The saga continues . . . I just opened Chrome and it said that three extensions, including uBlock Origin and Bypass Paywalls Clean, were disabled, so I went to manage extensions and they were still there but just turned off. There was a message that Google recommends that they be "removed" but I was able to just turn them back on, and now they are working again. What a bunch of dicks! Who died and left Google in charge of the world?

I wonder whether as this terrorism plays out the ability to just turn them back on will continue or whether we will eventually not be able to even turn them back on and/or they will be permanently removed. Any thoughts or knowledge on this?

I suspect the message/disabling represents just the first round. As the chromium engine is continually revised going forward, code supporting Manifest v2 extension access via API's will continue increasingly being deprecated and removed from the codebase. Depending on what a given extension is actually doing and how, its performance may not be affected until relevant altered API's and functionality impact it specifically... hence the current disclaimer/disabling may be more in the way of a heads-up of what will lie ahead, sooner or later, for a given Manifest v2 extension.

I run Linux with the Google Chrome Browser and I too got the notification that uBlock Origin was disabled. I was able to go to my extensions and re enable it, but I don’t know for how long. I like it because you can quickly disable Java for some web pages as needed to see under “pay us now to read” banners and finish reading your article. We’ll see how long it continues to work.

Well, apparently they finally sent us to the showers. I opened Chrome and there was a notice that both Bypass Paywalls Clean and uBlock Origin were disabled and unlike before I could not re-enable them. I had just run a PrivaZer cleanup but doubt that that had anything to do with it. Firefox is my default but I had just opened Chrome to check something else. You can still use uBlock Origin Lite so I added that as well as adding AdGuard that has a free version. Again I don’t use Chrome primarily so it’s not a real big issue for me but it is really beyond annoying how Google seems to think that they own the world and that nobody else even has the right to exist outside of their petty little bubble.

I just removed both Bypass Paywalls Clean and the standard uBlock Origin from Chrome. Bypass Paywalls Clean still works pretty well in Firefox where they have promised to continue to support Manifestv2 for uBlock Origin, although Bypass Paywalls Clean is having troubles of its own so certainly whenever I might use Chrome (which will be less and less) I will be using Remove Paywalls that seems to in any event be just as good, if not better, than the current state Bypass Paywalls Clean’s usability.

I can relate, but at the end of the day it’s their browser and they can do what they want with it. I have not used Google apps in years, especially their browser.

takeahike It’s because Google and Chrome(as well as Youtube) live off of Ads. I’ve read that uBlock Lite is almost as good a original uBlock. Waiting to see how much longer Edge resists full blocking. But I’m a Firefox user as well.

True, but not when it is an illegal monopoly–there are legal limits and those limits exist supposedly for good reason, like the often promoted fallacy that capitalism is fair and equitable. They’ve certainly lost my business but then again when does a virtual monopoly ever seem to care? Then when the government in the rare case does do something, they just cry like a bunch of babies and typically wind up with a sweetheart settlement while the guy who steals a pack of gum gets thrown in the can with the keys thrown away.

The bigger problem is the monoculture in browser engines.

We went from having multiple players making browser engines - Microsoft’s Trident, Opera’s Presto, Mozilla’s Gecko, Google’s Blink and WebKit.

Opera abandoned Presto years ago and went to Chromium/Blink. Mircosoft also shifted to Chromium. So, now we’re largely down to Gecko and Blink.

Pretty much every browser is built on Chromium now. Whether it’s Edge, Brave, Vivaldi, and all the other lesser known ones like Yandex and a bunch of others.

While Chromium is open-source, Google maintains a lot of control. And, it really isn’t feasible to build a new engine from scratch. I think there’s still some people trying to work on Servo (which I think was something Mozilla planned to switch to then abandoned). It just takes too many resources to build, and on top of that you have to deal with incompatibility issues as a lot of sites are merely ‘tested on Chromium’ much like they were ‘Built for Internet Explorer and best viewed at 800×600’ many years ago.

So what’s the point if lite does the same thing? Is this one of those cases of them wanting everyone to know who’s boss even though it makes no real difference in the end?

Safari, which is the default for many, many, many Apple users is still Webkit. I use Brave (Chromium) on my Mac however.
