Toronto doing snow removal

The oddest thing: a city crew just went past my place doing snow removal. They had one of the big snow auger attachments on a front end loader and dump trucks being filled up. I have lived here since February 2004 and they have never done it before. We are are a side street that just loops, often not plowed for days (sidewalk plow has still not been around since the snow last week). I assume the local plow guys requested it, when I was out last week and they came by one of the drivers commented that they had no place to put the snow, but he still did a good job (front end loader with plow and windrow cleaner) pushing back most piles at the sides of driveways.

Donoreo Most likely forced to do it or suffer the repercussions when it melts too quickly in the upcoming warmup. I suppose it could also have to do with getting emergency responders into certain areas with tight confines such as you described .

That's how they've always done it here. Though years ago they used to have dedicated snow blowers, with larger impellers and chutes, that did a better job, more quickly. I guess these are cheaper, and usable for more than just snow-clearing.

I'm assuming Mississauga is doing something similar. We literally have major intersections with live lanes that have disappeared due to all the snow. Nevermind all the sidewalks that remained buried forcing pedestrians to walk on the road.

That's exactly it; in the summer they're back to regular duties. They use them here, but in residential streets they blow the snow onto the front lawns rather than in trucks.

GrumpyCanadian The snow blowers were made in Quebec by Sicard, so it was a "Buy Local" measure. Sicard is gone and snowblowers are now made either in Europe or the US.
