Website Tips - How to use BBF

This website uses different terminology than you may be used to. Some websites may use the term, forums, here we call them tags. Similarly, other websites may use something called threads, here they are called discussions. You can add your favorite Tags to “My tags” for easy access. You can dismiss most stickies by marking them as read. You can’t dismiss super-stickies. Click on the unread indicator from a list of discussions to mark as read. You can hide all discussions with a particular tag. This way they won't appear on /all view. You can ignore individual discussions. You won’t be notified about them, and you won’t see them in your discussion list. When viewing a discussion, press the triangle next to Following, then choose Ignoring Notification Overload – Check the settings page to make sure you don’t get overloaded with notifications. Many people like to disable these: (1) Someone creates a discussion in a tag I'm following (2) Someone posts in a tag I'm following. You can search within a discussion by clicking on the down arrow next to the reply button. Hover over a user avatar to read their bio. You can reply with an inline quote by selecting the text you want to quote, then press quote. Pick an emoji by pressing : then type the name of the desired emoji. Ignore the regional_indicator lines, just keep typing the name of the emoji you want. To get a permalink to a post, click on the date of the post.

LOL i came to this thread to ask how we can pin our favorite groups in the site like DSLReports rather than following groups but it looks like that isn't possible... ?

I asked a long time ago, it apparently is not possible.

Is there any way to stop the “choose tags to follow” pop-up every time I visit the forum? I tried choosing one, to see if that would stop it, but it doesn’t.

david3 All I had to do was to choose and save. I have never seen it again.

I have a question…I note sometimes people post a link to an article, but also have a summary/start of the article in a blue box below it. It’s the same blue box as ding a reply to a post. I assume there is some sort of hashtag that surrounds the text? How is that done?

You can paste the selection, highlight it and then click on the “insert a quote” button at the bottom or enclose the passage in [quote][/quote] tags. You can also precede each section of a passage with a >.

Does BBF support spoiler tags in posts? When I tried, it was just left as part of the post. There does appear to be a Flarum extension if needed.

Spoiler Alert. . . yes. It’s the triangle with the exclamation mark in it. Mouse and drag over the blanked out line.

Yes at the bottom of posting box is a triangle highlight what you want click on that triangle or

     > ! text here ! < no spaces

When I’m in a forum and move my pointer to some location on the side a pop-out appears showing me the topics in that forum. Sometimes it doesn’t go away. Very, very, very annoying. Is there a setting to stop that from happening? Sometimes the pop-out doesn’t go away.

vaxvms Are you accidentally “pinning” the side panel open on the occasions where it doesn’t go away. See the push pin in your second attachment. You should be able to toggle that on and off.

Kathy_9 I might be. But if I could permanently prevent that obnoxious, unwanted popout I couldn’t ‘pin’ it.

vaxvms There is no way to permanently disable it. You can keep it there by pressing the pin or you can unpin. When not pinned it will slide out when you hover your mouse to the left edge of a discussion page, and go away when you move your mouse away from the left edge of a discussion page.

It works like that most of the time, but it happens that it needs help to go away (firefox). I too find it annoying (if I ever open it, it is by accident). 🙂

Edit: After posting this, I couldn’t get it to open. It required a reload of the thread.

fmd It can be recreated by having the mouse exit the browser window at the left and let it re-enter the window at the right side of the panel. It now stays open. That may also have been the reason the other times. I can’t say for sure.

NB: it will render as individual photos in the preview but will convert to slideshow when posted.
Also, the large blank space is due to the different image sizes.
