Went into a Bank of America (I have an account with them) to transact business and there was one teller. She was waiting on an elderly guy who was possibly getting scammed. If a transaction at a teller takes more than a few minutes something fishy is going on, especially if it involves a customer over a certain age. He had a woman with him who appeared to be in her 40s (BIG RED FLAG) as the bank has no way of telling whether she is a relative. I was there to make a deposit, from what I could tell he wanted cashier’s checks. The guy seemed confused on what he needed them for. Like I said the bank did their job and due diligence. I’m glad I don’t work for a financial institution as a lot of fishy stuff goes on there. And elderly are prime rib for scam artists. My grandmother got scammed more than once. I’ve seen enough scams targeting elderly in the supermarket, especially involving gift cards and Western Union (which we got rid of last year THANK GOD!!!). I think selling lotto tickets is just as fishy as the foreign lottery scam because I see elderly buying them by the stack. I always say when it comes to service, if you didn’t request it, REJECT IT!!! If you did not initiate the call and they ask for one time codes, personal information, payment/payment information, etc, HANG UP!!! If someone shows up at the door saying they are doing work, ask for ID and call the company at their customer service number to verify, not the number the individual gives you.

…with skimmer insert found almost anywhere, including bank ATMs. Just don’t swipe if AT ALL possible.

My bank has used tap instead of swipe at ATMs for awhile now, but I go to ATMs maybe once a year, if that. I use tap on my phone almost exclusively and have been pulling the cards out of my wallet and leaving them at home too (still have to keep a couple for the odd places like Walmart). My phone using face recognition to unlock it and again to authorize payments is safer than the cards in my wallet which require neither.

MacLeech Bank of America has the tap feature on most of their ATMs. And I have my BofA card on my Apple Watch for that reason. If I use a drive-up ATM I activate the Apple Pay feature and tap my watch on the reader since I wear my watch on my left wrist.

But given I work in a supermarket I have to be careful when helping a customer with the credit card terminal that the NFC does not accidentally pick up my card and I accidentally pay for the customer’s groceries instead of the customer. Yes I wear my Apple Watch on the job. Gotta keep track of the time and date, if a customer writes a check I have to make sure they put the correct date on the check or it could be a headache for our cash control office. And yes we still take checks. Not too many establishments do anymore.

Another reason to leave cards at home and/or keep them in a RFID blocking wallet. Although, RFID range at payment terminals is a few inches, not sure how you’re getting your own card that close helping someone else.

Tap to pay on devices normally takes positive activation/confirmation from the device user. You normally can’t just tap it accidentally and make an unintended payment.

You need to double click the butting on your watch to activate payment on your watch. It will not just pick up your info from the watch being close.

MacLeech not sure how you’re getting your own card that close helping someone else.

I’m talking about the ApplePay on my Apple Watch. I have my BofA card on there because you can use ApplePay at their ATMs and I can just stick my arm out at the drive up ATMs. The NFC reader is usually at the bottom of the terminal and the card slot is usually at the top depending on the machine. On the Diebold and Hyosung machines (which most BofA machines are in this area) the NFC reader is at the bottom. If you run into an NCR machine the NFC and card slot are next to each other. I’m short (5’ 5”) and drive a sedan (Tesla Model 3) so drive up ATMs are a PITA. I think ATMs have gotten better with the Tesla vs the Toyota. The Toyota was low to the ground. They design drive-up ATMs for those in SUVs or crossovers.

I had a customer put her wallet close to the card reader. It had an NFC card in it. It scanned the NFC card right through her wallet. When I cashed her out I charged the card that was in her wallet as opposed to the card that she wanted to pay with. Customer was not happy. We refunded the card and charged the correct card. Given that we have a POS system that goes back to the late 90s (new enough to have touchscreen technology) I can only see if a card is in the system before processing, not what card I’m processing.

Our store uses the NCR StoreLine platform for any of the IT guys on here who might be familiar with it. System is outdated but does its job. Newer than what Costco uses. Their system goes to the 80s. StoreLine would be a massive upgrade for them.

I was specifically referring to the following statement, if it wasn’t clear from my last post quote, when I wondered how you got so close to customers you might get your own card tapped.
