While we’re drifting off topic–oh no, lawyer advertising! In California and Vegas it’s beyond belief/saturation–virtually every sign along the freeway is one or the other, with many have two or three signs (the same firm) within a quarter mile of each other. And then there was Uber after them, calling them the “billboard lawyers,” pushing on television every five minutes how the took “every dime from her;” she went to every doctor they told her to and they took 46% of her settlement and she didn’t have anywhere near enough left to pay the doctors and is now virtually homeless. I don’t know what was worse: looking at all the signs and their ads on television or listening to the endless Uber attack ads the very next minute. They had it all set up to fight this to the death with very high profile competing state initiatives for November but believe it or not they reached a deal (I guess the lawyers just saw it as another settlement, although there was no check involved): Newsom signs law that lets Uber, attorneys avoid ballot measure fight.
Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday signed a bill that came out of a deal between Uber and California lawyers, shaving two competing initiatives that likely would have driven hundreds of millions of dollars in political spending from the November ballot.
Uber and the Consumer Attorneys of California had qualified competing measures for the ballot but struck an agreement that lets them avoid an expensive fight — each side had either raised or allocated more than $75 million for their campaigns — over liability around ride-hailing, with Uber wanting to limit attorney contingency fees in medical recoveries for all California crashes and the attorney group wanting to increase Uber’s liability for sexual misconduct.
