Fiber Finally

We finally got ATT fiber lit in our hood, so it looks like we will be ditching Comcast. I’m torn on which plan to get since the Gigabit is actually the cheapest if you include the $200 gift card, but its been my experience to never count on that. With the 1 year discount the Gig is $60/mo & the 300Mbps is $45/mo (no autopay), but the gift card brings Gig to ~$43/mo for the first year. Like many others I have zero need for Gig but it’s cheapest and I can always change back to 300Mbps after the year is done. So, 1) Anyone have gift card experience with ATT? Is it worth it or not worth considering? 2) Is it easy to change your speed down to a lower tier or is it a headache once setup? I’ll be putting the Gateway into passthrough to my own router, just curious on others experience with install and performance compared to cable. We’re currently on Comcast 300/100Mbps (midsplit) FOR $50/mo for reference.

xpxp2002 nope. No special offerings. Just a different choice was all they offered (and better wifi due to the advantages of coax over fiber).

I have a buddy who can’t (won’t) give up his Comcast because his wife “has” to have certain cable channels. He’s had Frontier fiber available for years, but sticks with the 1.2Gb Comcast package (with midsplit) on the rack rate - he’s a long time customer, pays full price for a large cable package, MLB, internet, all his cell phones, etc. All through Comcast. Guarantee he’s spending over $300/mo, but hey different strokes I guess. He’s their favorite kind of ARPU customer.

Sounds like your buddy could use some serious education and showing that he could chop his bill in half if he picked Fiber and evaluated his phone situation.

Youtube TV, although kinda expensive might fit his woman’s “needs” There are others, like DirecTV Stream that way work. Cable is not the only game in town anymore. Adapt or die. Or in his case, stupidly pay 300+ a month for lesser service.

adlr Yeah, the WAN transport medium has no impact on a LAN air interface.

Oh I’ve tried, but you can only lead the horse to water. Most of my friends are know-it-alls just like me, the difference is that they aren’t. 😁

Same here when GoNetSpeed came to town. I keep track by watching the new drops going up on the poles when I walk my dog. As for the Xfinity store, used to be like going to the RMV, now you can walk right in and talk to someone. Went right in to sign up for TV and I saw a rep right away. Many communities in my area have Fiber (GoNetSpeed, Gateway Fiber, Whip City Fiber). The only ones stuck on Xfinity are those who live in apartment complexes because cable internet is delivered over existing cable TV wiring and many apartments were wired for cable in the 80s and 90s to attract tenants. Even some complexes offered free basic cable back in the day.
