I'm hoping the many people who posted in the Pub forum (DSLReports) will continue to do so here. It was/is a great way to kill time and get a good laugh first thing in the morning. Heck, any time of the day for that matter.

px_eliezer_ Pluto had been designated as a planet for so many years, it should have been allowed to remain.

You’ll have to get the International Astronomical Union (IAU), not AAS as I wrote previously, to change their 2006 vote on the formal astronomical definition of planet.

Previous to that vote, there hadn’t been a formal astronomical definition of planet. Nothing had really been decided.

Very controversial and far from a consensus.

The (Pluto) vote involved just 424 astronomers who remained for the last day of a meeting of the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in Prague.

“I’m embarassed for astornomy,” said Alan Stern, leader of NASA’s New Horizon’s mission to Pluto and a scientist at the Southwest Research Institute. “Less than 5 percent of the world’s astronomers voted.”

Just 424 members voted whereas the IAU has several thousand members.

And it was at the very end of a multi-day conference when almost everyone had gone home.

Some say it was done by Europeans who were jealous because Pluto is the only major planet discovered by an American.

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs signed a bill making Pluto the official state planet. It was discovered at an observatory in Arizona, but was downgraded to a dwarf planet in 2006.
