I'm hoping the many people who posted in the Pub forum (DSLReports) will continue to do so here. It was/is a great way to kill time and get a good laugh first thing in the morning. Heck, any time of the day for that matter.

I remember the national anthem, and the subsequent test pattern.

We had an 8x antenna on a 25′ tower, great reception of stations 60 miles away except when airplanes flew between us and the stations. Then we would see the signal shifting and flutteringuntil the plane had passed. When our local radio station added a UHF TV station, we bought a UHF receiver that outputted to channel 3.

Remember when you had to adjust horizontal and vertical? And tubes an occasionally flyback transformers needed replaced?

I remember going with my father to the hardware store to use the tube tester. There were drawers with the replacement tubes built into the tester.

Yes and you also brought back some great memories!!!

My Uncle gave us an old Black and White TV I believe around 1960 and we had rabbit ears for an antenna. We lived about 25 miles north of Indianapolis so the reception was OK but not great… I was still in H.S. and managed to talk my Father into purchasing an Huge Antenna for the top of the Chimney “About 30 Feet” up and also a Rotor and installed it for the family…

That made all the difference in the world!!! I don’t remember when they finally managed to get cable but it was long after I had graduated from college and was working…

The other thing that I used to do was when the TV quit working I would pull the tubes out of it and take them over to the Drugstore in town and test them and replace the bad one…

A couple of other things were Airplanes would mess with the TV signal and we only had if I remember correctly 5 VHF channels and 1 UHF channel back then.

Back in the Good Old Days!!!

Our neighbors up the road had one of those. It was actual solid wood. We had one with only a TV in it. When it crapped out, Dad made a tool cabinet from it.

So, back in 63-65, 67-68 one of my part time jobs was repairing those monsters. More car radios, since I was the one that could get under the dash.

I did learn the repairman line, “it’s got to go to the shop, lady”

After the army 67 I worked for RCA service doing a lot of antenna installs and TV calls, while going to college. Then got a real EE job. The rest is history.

With car radios, I mostly replaced tubes or vibrators. One of my friends had a 45 RPM record changer installed in his ’58 Chevy Impala. I recall him taping a penny to the tone arm to keep it tracking while he drove.

But with glowing tubes and a working vibrator you were all set. 🙄
